A July 8 committee meeting will study the need for an addition to Port Hope High. The Durham District High School board also approved two years rental for six portable classrooms with option to buy.
The Orono Public Library features a touring display of about twenty canvases by 13th grade students selected as best in 1963 Hallmark Art Scholarship Fund submissions. The show runs at the library for up to two weeks with abstract modern, still life and real life works in pencil oil and watercolor.
Orono Park hosted the annual school picnic with at least 250 children and about 50 parents and teachers attending. A six o'clock dinner featured plentiful foods and desserts, with fresh milk for children and tea for adults.
The Orone Water System is nearing completion with early August or sooner expected to turn on municipal water. The north stand pipe is finished and painted green, with finishing disinfection yet to be done. The distribution system is nearly complete and only a few hundred feet remain to the highway.
Ludwig Heimrath of Toronto dominated the Dun Trophy Dash at Mosport claiming the 1965 Canadian Driving Championship. He lapped the field in a McLaren M6 and completed 30 laps in 48 minutes 27.4 seconds at an average 90.8 mph. Bob McLean Vancouver placed second and Eistel Maier Thornhill finished third in Lotus 23B cars.
The Orono Police Trustees and Mr. Garnet Smith met to swap property for road width. Smith gains 30 feet in front of his Bowens Garage area while the village gets a 26 foot strip on the south side to complete a 66 foot unopened road allowance. Main Street parking decisions were deferred.
Fire and municipal officials from most townships in the two counties urge the next United Counties council session to fully fund radio communications equipment. The aim is to connect all fire departments into a province wide fire communication network. The plan emerged at a Cobourg meeting convened by mutual aid coordinator Robert Fitzgibbon and EMO coordinator Gordon Wright.
A Sunday School anniversary service at Orono United Church on June 27 features A Carruthers as speaker. Morning sessions split into Nursery Kindergarten and Primary at 10 am with puppet show by Mrs. L Aslett and several teachers. Parents and members gather as students play roles while nursery care is provided by Hi C group for the 10 am service.
Orono Public School held a field day with two teams red and white. The white team won 140 to 137 points with group winners listed by age group and trophies from the Newcastle Lions Club for best girl Darlene West and best boy Fred Bunting.
