Colt Derby A Success Port Perry Horse Wins

The Port Perry trotter Andy K Slue won the Colt Derby at Orono racetrack with a 2.12 time amid 750 spectators. Virginia's Boy finished second, Mary Jane P third, as twenty-nine horses competed. The invitation pace saw Gus Scott clock 2.08 4/5, while four lead horses added color to the event.

Vintage Car Rally Draws Local Antique and Classic Cars

Between 40 and 50 members of the Antique and Classic Car Club of Canada held a picnic and rally at the National Stud Farm north of Oshawa. Cars from 1929 to 1935 models were shown and driven under their own power with speed tests and races. Notable entries included Ken Adams’s 1313 Model T Ford Loyd Wood’s 1931 Model A and Laverne Chapman’s 1913 Model T Ford.

Park Program Enrollment Nears Opening Day

Registration for the Orono Park Program drew 65 children with many more expected before its July 4 start. Supervisor Mrs. Frances Lunn oversaw the process, with $3 per child or $5 for two or more.

Sunday School Members Tour Five Oaks Training Camp

Ten Senior High Sunday School members and five adults toured Five Oaks United Church Training Camp near Paris Ontario. They attended Bible study, toured grounds, viewed a race film, heard the Orono Band, and held a picnic at Hamilton Botanical Gardens before returning home. The trip honored Mrs Armstrong for organizing and parent cooperation for transport and meals.

Orono Park to Build Gunite Pool with $12,200 Bid

Orono Park Board and Chamber of Commerce discuss constructing a Gunite pool on the site of the old bowling green. The tender from H Partner for 12,200 is recommended. Council approval for loan backing is awaited before contracts and work can start. The current pool will remain open during construction planning.

Vernon Singer to Speak at Crone Meeting

Vernon Singer MPP North York will address a June 27 1960 meeting on Current Municipal Problems. A recognized municipal affairs authority he served on North York Council three years and as Reeve in 1957 1958, also on Metropolitan Toronto Council and is the youngest ever to join its Executive Committee.

Orono Orphans Donate for New Pool Project

The Orono Orphans Hockey Club voted to contribute 100 dollars to finance a new swimming pool at Orono Park. The full club approved the action and hope it spurs further donations. The Orono Hi-Teens pledged support with Friday’s dance proceeds going to the pool.

Assistance To Needy Explained At Orono United Church

The Orono United Church Evening Auxiliary met June 16 in the Sunday School Auditorium. President Margaret Arnott led with Hymn 288 and prayers, minutes by Joan Couvier, and treasurer Kathy Armstrong noting a generous cheque from W.A. ladies via Mrs. Irwin for aid to the Hockey Banquet. Mrs. Down from Ebanezer spoke on dispensing clothing and sewing supplies to those in need, stressing overseas and local aid, followed by missionary notes from Mary Rutherford on Africa. The meeting featured cancer dressings made by members, a piano solo by Stella Morton, and closed with Benediction and lunch.

Proposed Dump Site Approved By Health Dept

Clarke Township Council discussed road projects and building codes, approving an ice cream stand and a lunch bar if standards are met. A dump site decision was made with Hale property chosen for a township dump, Hicks option debated, and a Hicks plan dismissed.

Playground Leader To Attend Training Camp

Clarke Township Recreation Committee met in the Orono Municipal Building with members and Jack Hilbeck from the Ontario Community Programmes Branch. They review grants of about $1500 for 1960 operations and plan sewing typing millinery and leathercraft programs plus a Leaders Training Camp for Miss Mary Lynn Bailey at a $20 fee.
