Sunday School Holds Anniversary Parade in Orono Church

The Sunday School of Orono United Church marked its anniversary with a capacity crowd. Students led by the Orono Band paraded through town and filled the church, performing two vocal choruses as enrolment growth and the need for more teachers were noted by Rev. Art Kewley and Sunday School Superintendent M H Staples.

Record Number Of Junior Compete In Livestock Judging

A record 87 competitors took part in the Junior Farmers Annual Durham County Livestock Judging Competition at Orono. 71 juniors and 16 seniors competed with a tie for junior first between Ron Brooks Bowemanville and John Sanderson Bailieboro, each scoring 549 of 600. Sanderson earned the CNE shield for high novice judge. Earl Brown Newcastle led the seniors with 572. Coach prize went to Rev. Gray of Port Hope for high coach. second was Gerald Brown Newcastle. Judges included LeRoy Brown, Sidney Macdonald and Ken Best. Livestock judged included swine, cattle, sheep, and dairy stock at various local stations.

The Orono club posted two wins and one loss in a three game stretch. Wins came against Garden Hill and Kendal with losses to Newcastle and Cambourne. Crono's key hits and K West's pitching highlighted the week as locally strong performances posted a 3 2 record to date.

New Bottom Installed in Park Swimming Tank

The Orono Community Memorial Park reports repairs and upgrades this week including a new concrete bottom by Gaffney Construction replacing the damaged two inch layered base. A new cement floor replaces the old wooden floor. The park plans a 25 cent car fee on Sundays to fund maintenance and improvements.

Bantams Suffer 15 5 Loss at Newcastle in Debut Game

Orono Bantams travel to Newcastle for their first South Durham League game and lose 15 to 5. Ted Hooey catches, Eric Carleton and Bob Wetherup split pitching honors as the boys struggle at bat and in the field but keep fighting. New uniforms from the Orono Amateur Athletic Association mark the occasion.

Local Restaurant Changed Ownership This Week

Found's Restaurant in Orono, opened in March 1951 by Dane Found, was purchased this week by Robert Thomas and Clarence Wood. The eatery will continue serving full meals drinks and snacks. Thomas who was born in Orono has Kendal ties and will reside upstairs with his wife and daughter.

Orono School Trustees Discuss New Heating Plant

Orono Public School trustees met Monday evening to discuss upgrading the heating system. They plan to call for tenders once details are available and will reconvene next week to further consider the project. The current coal burning unit has been inefficient and coal gas is often evident in the second floor rooms during winter.

Qreno Hydro Expands Staff and Sets New Office Hours

The Oreno Hydro Commission hires Mrs. Norton as secretary and bookkeeper and expands office hours from 12 30 p m to 5 30 p m Monday through Saturday except Wednesday closed all day. The office also opens Saturday evenings 7 to 10 during collection periods. Mr Dent receives a 500 dollar annual raise retroactive to January 1 bringing his salary to 3000 annually while total payroll nears 4000. He will read meters and oversee hydro system work.

Death of Mr George Butters at Orono

Mr George Butters born December 5 1880 in Cheshire England came to Orono in 1912 and ran freight and cartage for 1919 onwards. He served as Anglican St Saviour's Rector’s Warden and Sidesman until illness in 1954. Funeral June 2 at St Saviour’s with interment in Orono Cemetery.

William H Wilson dies suddenly at Kendal home

William Henry Wilson died suddenly of a heart attack on Tuesday afternoon June 1 at his Kendal home. Funeral held June 4 at Kendal United Church with Rev. S J Pike officiating. Interment in Orono Cemetery. Survived by widow, two daughters, three sons, eleven grandchildren and one great grandchild. Pallbearers named. Garden Hill origin and 18 years residence in Kendal noted.

Canada to fully process its uranium at Eldorado refinery

In Commons Rt. Hon. C. D. Howe announced a 2.5 million program to upgrade the Crown Eldorado refinery in Port Hope so Canada can process its own uranium ore. He cited Chalk River studies on atom generated power and outlined plans to form a new Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. holding company overseeing atomic research and production.
