Orchard storage plant to aid Durham apple growers

The Durham Growers' Cooperative plans a $200000 cold storage plant beside the Newcastle CPR station to stabilize apple sales. Funding includes $60,000 from the Dominion Government and a $100000 provincial loan, with $45000 raised from shareholders. The two storey building will house future expansion and hold fruit at about 32 degrees, aiding supply to nearby markets. Durham growers from Orono to Maple Grove participate, hoping to cut transport costs and reduce private cellar storage losses. The site work includes a 120 by 112 foot structure, with excavation by Dickie Construction and water found at 408 feet through limestone.
