Regional Council Plans To Reclaim Fallow Land
The Central Ontario Regional Development Council drafts a plan to help skilled young farmers reclaim fallow land in a four county area from Oshawa to Burlington and Lake Simcoe. A central land agency would lease land to graduates and other farmers under Ontario agriculture direction with low cost farm equipment loans.

Bowmanville High to Add Portable Classrooms on School Lot
Two portable classrooms are being erected on the Bowmanville High School parking area and are due to be completed by August 1. Glenn Reynolds Custom Building and Contracting of Courtice handles the work. The district considers a new Bowmanville high school site east of Liberty Street North and south of Carlisle Avenue. A preliminary study by the Durham County District High School Board is underway to explore a composite school with academic vocational and commercial courses. Autumn registration for Bowmanville High is projected at 630 students. Local students attend Courtice Secondary School for commercial and vocational classes.

Walter J S Rickard Dies Suddenly at Mount Sinai Toronto
Walter John Stuart Rickard died suddenly at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto on Friday in his 20th year. Born in Bowmanville he attended Shaw's Public School and Bowmanville High School, studied engineering at the University of Guelph, and held student leadership roles. He was active in junior farmer activities in Durham County, winning the outstanding junior farmer award and the Oshawa Real Estate Board scholarship. Survived by his parents and two brothers, funeral was at Newcastle United Church on Monday July 24.
