Large turnout from Durham County gathers at Orono Community Memorial Park for a picnic hosted by the Durham County Federation of Agriculture. W H Porter of the Farmers Advocate spoke urging unity in a national farmers movement while attendees toured the Forestry Station and enjoyed sports and family meals under elm shade.

Bowmanville Soldier Receives Military Medal for Gallantry
Cpl Carman Gerald Barrett of Bowmanville received the Military Medal for gallantry in action. Born January 21, 1916 in Kerrobert Saskatchewan, he worked at Goodyear in Bowmanville before enlisting June 1 1942. He sailed overseas March 1943. his parents live at 75 Liberty St North. a brother serves in the RCAF in Burma.

The Recreation Hall at the R C A F in Smithers B C hosted a June 14 wedding as Phyllis Margaret Hargreaves daughter of J Hargreaves Quick became the bride of LAC Carman Aylmer Tennant son of J A Tennant Leskard Ontario Chaplain C A Sutton officiated. The ceremony featured ivory satin and lace gown and a reception at the Telkwa Hotel with friends attending from Vanderhoof and other towns. After a short honeymoon the couple will travel to Toronto where Tennant will be stationed with the RCAF.

Annual Fish Derby Returns with Orono Club Trip
Twenty members of the Orono Fish and Hunt Club head to the Bay of Quinte area for the annual fish derby on Sunday and Monday August 12 and 13. Two boats are hired and the group expects a great time with tales to tell on their return Monday night. Previous participants recall a wonderful trip and some predict a bumper catch that could prevent meat shortages in their village for a month.

During favorable weather the Orono Community Park meeting featured two quilts completed that afternoon. A $10 donation to the Hospital for Such Children building fund was approved. A fair display and a picnic lunch followed with a nostalgic sing.

The Oddfellows dance at week’s end drew large crowds despite farmers’ busy schedules. Merrian's Orchestra from Cobourg performed for the first time here and will likely return in August. A copper tray was won by Miss Ethel Hickey, with net proceeds of 23 dollars.
