Orono W C T U Celebrates Sixtieth Anniversary

The Orono W C T U marked its 60th anniversary at United Church on Sunday July 29 with a large turnout. Rev. Sterling delivered a forceful address on spiritual power, and a varied program featured a male choir, soloists, and a colorfully decorated hall. Proceeds reached 60 dollars from Sunday and Monday events.

Letters recount gifts of cigarettes and gum sent by the lodge to overseas servicemen. The writer describes duty with the 58th Welsh Division, DP camps near Dusseldorf, looting concerns, and efforts to aid 25 000 displaced persons. He notes damaged Rhine bridges, rubble strewn streets, and rebuilding needs. The second letter thanks for gum and reports leave in Ireland, Irish parade disruption, and Canadian labor and reconstruction concerns.

John Gibson Sr 80th Birthday Surprised by Neighbors

A surprise party honored John Gibson Sr as he marked his 80th birthday last Saturday. Neighbors serenaded him with Happy Birthday and For He's a Jolly Good Fellow and presented a pipe and tobacco. Attendees included Hi Millen of Toronto and his wife. The event featured cards, a Five Hundred and Euchre session, a bounteous repast, and a large birthday cake with candles.

Challenger Tank joins British forces in Holland debut

News confirms the Challenger Tank, the new British armoured vehicle, appeared in Holland in Autumn 1944. It follows the Cromwell, carries a 17 lb gun and a Browning, reaches 25 mph off road, and crews five men. A picture shows the Challenger turning a corner.

Orono TrusteesApprove 1945 Rate Same as Last Year

The Orono Police Trustees met July 25 and ordered several gravel and calcium chloride bills paid. They discussed and instructed preparation of a six mill village rate for 1945 and set steps to update the parking by law. At year end 1944 there were 35 856 women in Canadian armed forces. A Canadian team announced a drought tolerant pasture grass through crossing wheat with couch grass.

Liquor seizure after car chase ends in Cobourg court

Provincial Constable George Colling of Port Hope chased a Toronto man Alphonso Labraccque who fled with 317 bottles of liquor from Quebec Liquor Control Board stores. Labraccque paid a $500 fine after pleading guilty. Much of the article details Oak Lake Summer School events and leadership awards, noting 104 campers and a memorable Galilean service.

No Hot Dogs on Tuesdays and Fridays

Wartime Prices and Trade Board states meat items including hot dogs hamburgers and ham sandwiches cannot be sold on Tuesdays and Fridays by any seller. Roadside stands church socials charity fairs carnivals and amusement concessions are banned. Chicken rolls may be served on those days but not if the chicken is veal.

Wartime Board limits evictions for well behaved tenants

A Wartime Prices and Trade Board order bans notices to vacate for self contained dwellings by landlords or their families. Eviction notices to reclaim homes for personal use become invalid. The rule preserves a prior provision allowing three months notice for discharged armed forces members to reoccupy housing.

Orono Hydro Commission Plans Takeover Of Bowman's Work

The Orono Hydro Commission met July 25 with full membership. Bills were paid to Orono Telephone Co. Bowmanville Public Utilities and EH Dent for park work and supplies. A plan to assume management from Bowmanville was discussed and Mr Chase was praised for prior work. Dent will read meters and collect at 30 dollars a month starting July 1945.

Rickard Picnic Draws Large Crowd At Orono Park

The annual Rickard picnic at Orono Park drew about 125 attendees on Saturday July 28 with Mr Stanley Rickard of Lakefield presiding. Officers elected include President John Rickard Vice President Albert Pearce and Secretary Treasurer Mrs Archie Glenney.
