Clarke Township Mil Rate Increase Sets Taxes Up

Clarke Township council announced higher mill rates with 17.59 mills for commercial and industrial use and 13.84 mills for farms and residential. The total tax levy is $198000, with school rates adjusted after abolishing the general 4 mill school rate and installment payments planned for 1960.

Sixty Children Enrolled in Orono Summer Park Programme

The Orono Amateur Athletic Association opens its Summer Park Recreational Program with sixty children aged 3 to 12 enrolled and attending daily crafts, nature hikes, and games at Orono Armouries. Red Cross Swim Program Enrolment At Orono Pool

The Orono pool hosted a Red Cross swimming and water safety program with 100 children enrolled. Miss Mary Ann Armstrong leads the lessons with Marilyn Cobbledick assisting. Tadpoles group has 60 swimmers aged around three, while Beginners 15, Juniors 10, Intermediates 8 and Seniors 6. Classes run daily in July from 12 noon, funded by the Orono Red Cross with a small registration fee.

Clarke Township Council Rejects Hospital Addition Financing

Clarke Township Council on Monday evening debated Bowmanville Memorial Hospital expansion plans. The board sought immediate approval and funding of 86 000 in debentures with later annual revision plus a 4 000 and 5 000 grant for beds. Orono High School to Hire Fifth Full Time Teacher

Durham District High School board approved adding one more full time teacher at Orono High School to handle a projected enrolment of 130 to 140. Two grade nine classes will form, with the Commercial room converted to a regular classroom to accommodate the extra class. Enrolment is expected to set a record. Last year enrolment was 115 with four full time and one part time teachers.

Bowmanville Council Rejects Three School Plan

Bowmanville Council on Monday rejected the Durham County District High School bid to build three new high schools. It granted tentative approval to seek debentures for two new schools and unanimously supported sites at Darlington and Millbrook while deferring a third.

Retirement of Duncan couple at Cobourg Home for the Aged

The resignation of Mr and Mrs William J Duncan superintendent and matron at the Home for the Aged Cobourg was received by United Counties Council to take effect August 1 1946 They came from Campbellford in January 1946 to lead the home They cite the seven day a week nature of the job and age The couple aged 70 and 65 say they enjoyed the work and received good cooperation from county officials They may return to Campbellford and Bowmanville may lose a school as plans consider a second high school exposure in Bowmanville

New Kel-Rit Furniture Plant Planned for Orono

Kel-Rit Furniture Manufacturing will build a factory on the fifth line east of Highway 115 in Orono, relocating from Toronto. The plant, expected to hire about ten workers, should be finished by mid August. The Orono Chamber of Commerce discussed finances and approved a $100 contribution toward a drowning resuscitator, with total costs ranging from $600 to $1,000.
