Orono Police Trustees met at the Hydro Office to discuss incorporating the Police Village of Orono. They plan a public meeting to explain options, with Waddell to sketch a proposed map and signatures due by March 31.
Clarke Township residents contributed 907.40 to the National Red Cross drive with 460 sent to the Ontario Division and 100 kept for immediate sending. Local funds finance oleum percomorphum capsules for school children, with 51 600 supplied under Mrs. L. Bourne and Park work noted. Training under Mr. W. Bagnell produced many successful swimmers and lifeguards. The 1953 National drive aims to boost township cooperation.
Financial statement for the Orono Odd Fellows Service Club covering Oct 1 1951 to Sept 30 1952 shows receipts balance forward 188 81 from dances draws 589 55 and expenses including medical care 132 00 red cross 25 00 blind institute 10 00 Xmas cheer etc totaling 778 36 with balance on hand 306 42.
Thomas Kinsman lifelong Clarke Township resident died January 19 after long illness. Born December 25, 1861, he led Clarke Church Sunday School and served as secretary treasurer of Crooked Creek school, a sixty year member of Sons of Bis land Ledge. Funeral at Millson Farm home conducted by Rev. L. H. Turner. Interment by Jex and Smith Funeral Home Port Hope. Survived by wife Adeline Milson, son Hector, daughter Crono, nephew W F Kinsman Saskatoon.
Bowmanville Branch No. 178 of the Canadian Legion completed installation of officers on Thursday night with Rev. J. Kitchen sworn in as padre and A. Mavin, secretary, and W. Harrison Jr. and W. Bates as executive board. Previously on January 8 Commander James L. Lovell of Oshawa led the ceremony for the remaining officers.
James Wannan 78 of Kirby died January 2 at his Kirby home born December 26 1874 north of Nd al son of the late Jong and Grace Wannan. He lived in Kirby most of his life and married Gertrude. Funeral held January 5 at Kirby United Church with Rev. John Kitchen officiating. Interment Orono Cemetery. He leaves widow two sons Milton and Bill both of Kirby two daughters Mrs Harold Louch Starkville and Jean at home four grandchildren and three sisters Mrs Jennie Hooey Mrs George Henderson Of Orono and Mrs Loftus Bellamy Of Newcastle.
Vice-president S Dunn installed four officers last night and led fund raising ideas. He favored a more expensive car draw over a low priced model. A standing vote approved the car draw as discussion turned to a carnival and winter sports event, with a regatta proposed for later in the year.
A well attended Congregational meeting of Orono United Church reviewed 1952 progress with 337 total members and 39 new additions. Reports covered missions, choir, windows, finances, Sunday School, women groups, youth, and a debt repayment plan for the church building. Re-elected officers and a gift to Rev Kitchen marked the gathering.
Clarke Township Council meets January 18 1953 approving a total road budget of 56000 dollars for construction maintenance and new machinery under the Highway Improvement Act. The by law also names Pound Keepers and Fence Viewers for 1953 with listed appointees and duties.
After weeks of study in Clarke Township the sixth line area near the county road sees landowners approached for oil leases. Fred Tule seeks about a thousand acres with drilling expected within six weeks if leases are obtained. Prospects target 1500 to 2000 feet with potential earnings to landowners from production.
At the Durham Central Agricultural Society meeting in Orange Hall with twenty five directors present, Carlos Tamblyn of Orono was elected president. The session covered 1952 results, upcoming fair dates September 11 and 12, and plans for Field Crop entries and stable arrangements for light and race horses. Delegates were chosen to attend the King Edward Hotel convention February 4 to 6, and a social evening was planned to review delegate reports.
