Orono Memorial Park Board Holds Annual Meeting

The Oronos Memorial Park Board met Monday at Kumrite Apartments with eight members present. Chairman A E West presided as the board reported stronger finances Driven by a parking revenue rise to 677 from 280 50 in 1958 and a fee increase to 50 cents. The group discussed park improvements including trees a retaining wall drinking water quality and a new drinking fountain while considering repairs or replacement of the swimming pool. Arnold Wallace and H M Mercer were chosen to pursue pool options with the department of education and others. Alma Cuttell was named treasurer and Arnold Wallace secretary with monthly meetings set for the second Thursday.

Collingwood Skier Leads Kirby Trials Results

A 16 year old Austrian born skier from Collingwood dominated Kirby Trials at Oshawa Ski Club in Brimacombe Hill events. Werner Zotter of the Elue Mountain Ski Club won boys slalom downhill and jumping, placed third in cross country, and received Alpine and Nordic trophies. Blue Mountain Ski Club led all events except boys cross country won by Peter Barton of the University of Toronto Ski Club. A large crowd attended.

Forests Pay Dividends From County Plantations in 1920s

The Lindsay District and surrounding counties in Durham Northumberland and Ganaraska manage over 12000 acres of County Forests to curb erosion and reclaim marginal lands. Early pines now supply thinnings turned into poles posts and pulpwood with sales to a commercial firm and utility use in park projects.

Counties Council Receives 1960 Road Report

The United Counties of Northumberland and Durham report 315 miles of roads with 173.5 miles paved. Totten notes 55 percent paved, compares to 52 percent provincewide in 1958. Bridges total 18. extension roads about 12 miles. seven acre Cobourg land asset and storage yards. Road funding split 25 25 50 among counties town and Ontario Highways.

Orono Library Expands Collection With New Books

Orono Library Board held its annual meeting January 15 at 2 30 pm with eight members present. The treasurer urged funds for books and invited new members at 1 annual fee. Library hours are Saturdays 2 00 to 4 00 pm and 7 00 to 9 00 pm. all help is voluntary. The latest shipment includes 35 titles such as Lorena The Innocent House Friend to Friend The Scarlet Lily Out of my Heart Valley of Wild Horses Silver Fruit Blaze of Sunlight.

Annual Vestry Meeting at St Saviour's Church

The Annual Vestry Meeting was held in the Parish Hall on Wednesday January 25 with good attendance. Reports from two branches showed a healthy balance. Elected officers include Rectors Warden Robert Morton and Peoples Warden George Morton, Sidesmen Mr. Fletcher and Mr. Armour, Mr. Tomlinson and C. Grant, Envelope Secretary Mrs. Morris, Press Mrs. Murray, and Lay Delegate to Synod Geo Morton.

Seek Means Of Better Pheasant Distribution

The Clarke Township Game Commission met in Orono with about twelve people including Department of Lands and Forests officials and Doug Powell. They aim to expand pheasant release across more of the township to broaden hunting areas, suggesting smaller release lots of 100 instead of 500 to cover a wider area. The note indicates continued discussion on page 5.

Orono Badminton Club Competes At Newcastle Tournament

Twenty Orono players visited the Newcastle Club for an inter club badminton tournament. Orono won the men's and mixed doubles while Newcastle claimed the ladies doubles. A return visit to Orono is planned for February with a social badminton night and other activities. Eight Orono players enter the Eastern Ontario Championship finals in Oshawa starting January 30.

Orono Police Trustees Plan Budget and Community Centre Move

The Orono Police Trustees met in January with all members present. They form a finance committee to prepare a budget and report at the next meeting. The board discussed dog control, snow removal on Main Street, and renewing the Community Centre status with a grant potential. Heating costs at the Municipal Building were criticized and provincial option forms were to be pursued.

Appointments Made to County Bodies At First Session

At the first session of Counties Council appointments were made to county bodies. Reeve Garnet Rickard and Reeve R Carlaw to road commission for one and four years respectively. Golden Plough Lodge board includes Reeve D Cunningham Reeve L Hooton and Reeve F E Goodrich. Two to board of health Reeve H E Walkey and Deputy Reeve G Philip. Deputy Reeve W A Heberle and Reeve G Dean to Children s Aid Society. Reeve R Brown to re forestation. Auditor will be Reeve Stewart Gray. Jack Heenan named to special county property committee. Three to special finance committee Reeve Read Budge Reeve F E Goodrich and Reeve Lloyd Hooton. Port Hope Colborne and Bowmanville registry offices appointed Deputy Reeve W Heberle Reeve J Troop and Deputy Reeve I M Hobbs. Deputy Reeve Jack Erskine to jail and county property committee. Finance committee to meet in February and strike county rate then.

Orono Orphans Triumph In Close 4-3 Home Win

The Orono Orphans defeated Port Hope 4-3 before a 500-fan crowd at Orono Rink. Robie Robinson assisted on Crono’s goal and later tied the game. Doug Powell scored the winner in the final minute. Crono earned the win with solid goaltending as Lakeshore league standings tighten.
