Merger Talk Between Orono and Port Hope Tel Cos

At the Orono Telephone Co annual meeting Port Hope manager C M Jones proposed a merger with Orono. He outlined intercompany history, current phone counts 685 versus 1157, and revenues. A 1:1 Orono share Exchange plus 90 dollar note proposal would form a new company aiming to dial Orono and interconnect with Newcastle, with five exchanges and continued Orono Garden Hill operators.

Choir Elects New Officers at Orono United Church

The Orono United Church choir elected officers including President Wim Mitchell and Vice President James Pollard. Other roles named were Secretary Treasurer Reg Sutton, Librarian Jas Ruckaby, and convenors for soprano contralto tenor bass. Committees to secure music include W E C Workman, John Ford, and A A Drummond.

Local Association Meets with Nine Members in Bowmanville

On Tuesday evening January 20 Local Association members gathered at District Commissioner Merle Gilbart's home for a guide meeting with nine attendees. Reports covered travelling baskets raising about 38 dollars and troop enrollments for Brownies and Rangers. Plans were discussed for a Brownie Revel in the summer and a February 17 Thinking Day event with a Guides all Guides film.

Officers Installed At Evening Auxiliary of Oréno Church

On January 15 1959 Mrs Dorothy Watt convened the Evening Auxiliary of the Oréno United Church. Officers for 1959 were installed including President Dorothy Watt and Vice President Margaret Arnott. Members discussed fundraising for Baby Band leaders and supported missionary aid in India. A study session on Alaska followed with a talk on its geography and development and a paper on religious development in Alaska.

Guide News Slips Into Captain's Absence With Lessons

In the captain's absence Mrs Hamm, lieutenant led activities. Marlene Graham taught Accidents in the Home to attendees not at Mrs Armstrongs. Marlyn Cobbledick and Jo Anne Rutherford joined to teach Girl Guide songs and lead games. Anne Gilbank completed the Accidents in the Streets.

Orono Hockey Sets Friday Night Schedule At Orono Rink

Orono teams resume Friday action with four games at Orono Arena starting 6:30 pm featuring Atoms Pee Wees Bantams and Midgets plus a Saturday test for Orono Bantams against Oshawa and a Midget versus Port Hope Juveniles. OMHA playdowns possible. Town League results show Midgets 6 Kendal 4 with Carleton three goals.

Old Time Costume Carnival Planned for Orono Rink

Orono hosts a Friday evening carnival at the rink on February 2 to raise funds for bleachers. The event is sponsored by the Orono Chamber of Commerce and Orono Athletic Association with a 7 30 start featuring an Orono Atom hockey game against Bowmanville followed by public skating and costume prizes for kids and a two mile boys relay and one mile girls relay. The event recalls a 1930 speed skate tradition in the Old Arena.

Ratepayers To Discuss High School Board Position

Port Hope Ratepayers Association members met to study the town’s standing with the Durham County district high school board. They noted Port Hope pays the highest rate yet receives a larger government grant due to higher enrolment. They urged council to study ambulance service limits and asked Burley Bus Lines to improve on time performance to reduce hour waits.

Orono United Church Sees Strong 1958 Report

Congregational meeting in Orono United Church reviewed annual reports showing higher receipts and a 2125.33 balance after 1958 with major heating and repair costs. Enrolment in Sunday School rose to 150, with WMS raising over 1000 dollars and Teenagers group reporting 413.72 in receipts.

Durham County Forms Safety Committee for Farm Accident Survey

Durham County farmers meet in Orono to form a safety committee aiding a continuing Ontario survey. Bruce Taylor named chairman as delegates plan a two day Ontario Agricultural College event to learn survey details. The report lists 268 farm accidents in two months with 30 deaths and 193 injuries across causes including machinery, falls, fires, and livestock.
