United Counties Council meets January 19 in Cobourg for its first general session of 1959. Grants Announced for Peterborough Homes and Durham Aged Facility
The Provincial Welfare Minister announced grants for the Durham-Northumberland Home for the Aged and the Sisters of St. Joseph in Peterborough. The House of Providence Peterborough will receive a preliminary payment toward a 165-bed addition, with total project costs around 1.175 million and Ontario share about 412 thousand. The Durham project totals 520 thousand with province half funded, and the Peterborough home expansion is about half complete with a spring opening planned.

Fifteen Orono Cub Scouts were promoted to Scouts Monday evening at the Orono Municipal Building. Donald Goode led the ceremony with Bob Johnston and assistants Jo Ann Rutherford Russell Major and Mrs N Bailey. Four boys train for patrol leadership: Craig Hind Douglas Barraball Hans Bosgraaf Russell Rogerson. The Troop plans weekly meetings, leaving the pack with twenty one enrolled.

The January 1958 meeting of the W A was held January 8 in the Sunday School room with 17 ladies present. President Mrs H Allen presided. The treasurer noted 1958 funds raised totalled 1329.79. Reports covered devotional work, outreach, parsonage updates, library purchases, and 831 visits to the sick and bereaved. The meeting closed after installing 1959 officers and planning evening meetings.
