Park Street United Church Faces finish fund drive

The Park Street United Church annual meeting in the Sunday School room reviewed this year’s activities and reported strong progress across divisions. The building fund shows $11 217.71 raised with $10 804.76 spent, leaving $412.95 and an estimated $1 667.66 more to finish the church.

Jandrew Elected Warden For United Counties

The United Counties of Northumberland and Durham opened their January session on January 17 and elected the warden for 1950. Reeve Bruce Jamdrew of Murray Township won over Reeve O. J. Robins of Alnwick, securing the wardenship for the twin counties.

Foolish Theft Nets Pair Two Years

Campbellford men William Grieves and Edward Hicks were sentenced in Cobourg police court to one year definite and one month indeterminate reformatory terms. They robbed Wesley Anderson at a Campbellford service station on December 27 with a nickel plated revolver, taking the car and $25 after forcing two gallons of gas. Both were masked. a witness identified them and police caught them within five minutes.

Unseasonal Winds Batter Brovinice Area

High winds of seventy miles per hour lashed Brovinice on Saturday causing widespread disturbance. Orono suffered minor tree damage while fifth line residents faced roof and barn loss. Barns north of Newcastle and Hancock homestead barns sustained substantial damage. Hydro power briefly disrupted for about three hours on January 14.

W. M. S. Meeting Notes and Local Contacts

Newtonville records show a Thursday W. M. S. meeting in the parsonage led by vice president Mrs Geo Stapleton. Reports and an encouraging treasurer update are noted plus discussion of an Evening Auxiliary and Mission Band reorganizing. A social hour followed with several local visits and hospital news.

Presentation Honors Mr and Mrs Garland Cathcart

Friends and neighbors gathered in the Sunday School room on January 12 to present gifts to Mr and Mrs Garland Cathcart following their wedding. The event featured singing, a monologue, a duet, and tales by Rev Bunt, with thanks given by Annie Cathcart and a silver gift presented by Mrs Luxon.

Wesleyville Community Notes From Farm Forum To Congregational Meeting

Don Corby of Toronto visited Wesleyville over the weekend. The Farm Forum gathered at Mr and Mrs George Tufford’s home with strong turnout. Family and friends from Port Hope visited various local households on Sunday. Murray Payne attended the Junior Farmers Convention in Toronto Tuesday. Sunday School drew thirty two. Dr Oke spoke at afternoon church. Young People’s Union met Wednesday with Allan Holdaway in charge. Women’s Association, led by Mrs H Brooking, planned year projects at Mrs Wm O’Neill’s home. Annual congregational meeting elected officers for the year including Supt Wilfred Bee and secretary Harold Best. teachers and class leaders listed.

Farmers Problems Discussed At Durham Federation Meeting

The Durham Federation of Agriculture held a January 5 meeting at the home of president M. H. Staples. Delegates discussed subsidies and price controls, wartime price freezes, and the shift to farmer initiative amid Britain contract readjustments. John M. James spoke on subsidy proposals and Ottawa talks, noting temporary supports may continue for some products while egg and poultry policies remain unclear.

Apple Growers Face Two Million Surplus Challenge

The Northumberland and Durham Apple Growers Association met in Cobourg on January 10 with many attending. Experts noted improved production and marketing but dwindling export markets and potential elimination of many varieties due to limited future government aid. R P Longley cited widespread tree removal in the Annapolis Valley and warned that Canada’s growing apple potential exceeds domestic demand.
