Sugarfoot Minstrel Review Met With Approval

A large audience at the Town Hall Orono welcomed the Corinthian Players presenting the Sugarfoot Minstrels of 1948 and Musical Varieties on Friday February 20. Proceeds benefited the C. P. T. Fund. The show featured two parts with lively songs, bone soloes, chatter, and a hoe down finale.

Orono Boy Scouts To Hold March 6 Salvage Drive

Orono Boy Scouts announce a salvage collection on Saturday March 6. Residents should tie papers and magazines in bundles and place them at the curb for pickup later that day. This spring cleaning effort aims to clear old papers, rags, scrap metal, and magazines.

Lion Dane Found Presented With Lions Ring

On Thursday February 19 at the Elmhurst Hotel the Newcastle Lions Club hosted sixty to seventy Lions and guests. Lion Dane Found of Orono received a Lions ring for his work as carnival manager last summer and his generous time and management.

Evening Auxiliary Marks First Anniversary with Dinner and Meeting

Mrs. M. H. Staples hosted the Evening Auxiliary for its first anniversary with over thirty members present. Five new members joined bringing total to thirty four as the group planned to pack a bale a month for the Canadian appeal.

Warning from the motor vehicles branch urges timely purchase of 1947 motor license plates before March 1 to avoid inconvenience. December 31 1947 registrations show 644 512 passenger cars and 142 118 commercial motor vehicles in the province.

Durham County Federation Seeks $6000 For Need

The Canadian Appeal for Children seeks six thousand dollars in Durham County to aid war affected children in Europe and Asia. Funds will buy food clothing and medical supplies while volunteers coordinate from townships including Darrington Cartwright Clarke Manvers Cavan and Hope. Donations may be left at any county chartered bank due to poor road conditions preventing house-to-house canvassing.

1948 Seed List Now Available

The Seed Marketive and Publicity Committee of the Ontario Crop Improvement Seedation issues an up to date seed list for Ontario seed growers. It includes names and addresses, seed for sale, crop registration certificates, price notes, grade explanations, and 1948 objectives. A drive urges production of 2010 000 000 bushels of feed grain. Copies are free from the Ontario Department of Agriculture. The Orono Girl Guides announce a Figuré Skating Carnival at the Orono Arena on Friday evening February 5.

Orono Women's Institute Meets In February

The Orono Women's Institute held its regular monthly meeting in the Council Chamber on February 20. Delegates decided to donate 10 dollars for the Bowmanville Hospital ward upkeep and 50 dollars to the Appeal for Children. A roll call cited insect enemies of agriculture. Mr. Jones demonstrated Fuller brushes and products from Newtonville. Mrs. Garland of Port Hope spoke on the United Nations. Refreshments followed.

Clarke Township Reports Single Communicable Disease Case

The weekly communicable disease report for the United Counties shows one case in Clarke Township labeled murps. Other entries include Chickenpox in Bowmanville and various townships, with a total of 29 disease cases.

Sportmen's Show Opens at Toronto Coliseum Grounds

Representatives from about 89 local Anglers and Hunters associations organize the first Canadian National Sportsmen's Show at the Coliseum on March 13. The Toronto Anglers' and Hunters' Association Inc. sponsors this non profit event, with all proceeds aiding wildlife conservation. The exhibit features motor boats fishing gear camping equipment sportswear trailers radios and more. A two hour entertainment program runs daily at 2 15 and 8 15 p.m. with acts including Sharkey the seal Jimmy Ross log rollers retrieving dogs and archery champions in a 60 000 gallon portable pool under construction for the show.

Clarke School Area Meeting in Clarke Township

Clarke Township School Area met at the Secretary’s home on Feb 18 with Mr Russell Osborne presiding. Teachers reports aided checks on supplies repairs and absences fares. Newtonville school inspection urged no second teacher now but approved improvements and insurance work. Bills totaling 1600 were ordered paid.

Ganaraska Conservation Authority Reports Progress

The Ganaraska River Conservation Authority, formed Oct 8 1946, held its Feb 20 1948 meeting with A J Runnalls re-elected Chairman and T J Reid re-elected Vice-Chairman. H R W S Ryan Port Hope reappointed Secretary pro tem. In 1947 the Authority bought 1220 acres in Hope Clarke Cav an and seeks 1048 more, with land-purchase negotiations ongoing. The Province pays half of approved land purchases. forest planting and maintenance are provincially funded. The aim is 12 000 to 20 000 acres reforestation around Ganaraska headwaters to reduce blow sand and regulate runoff, while establishing demonstration farms with partners. The Authority reports lands owned and pending purchases. planting lags due to tree and labor shortages from wartime and competing demands. by 1952 a substantial forest is planned. The Authority enforces watershed by-law 1541 and Northumberland Durham by-law trends to restrict tree cutting, with a growing public opinion and anticipated by-laws for remaining townships. The budget is 5000 dollars annually plus provincial grants covering half land purchases.

Newcastle Memorial Arena Subscription Drive Nears Target

Nine of ten Newcastle families contribute to the arena fund with a $10 000 objective. With three quarters canvassed, about $4 000 more is needed unless generous donors boost initial gifts. Twenty Children Escaped Boarding House Fire at Pontypool

A two storey brick boarding house for babies in Pontypool near Orono burned at noon on Sunday February 22. Twenty children inside were evacuated with no injuries reported. The blaze originated in the roof and consumed the building, blamed on poor equipment and outdated fire wagons despite 50 volunteers and hydro crews efforts. The property is owned by M Bernstein and Joseph Berlin of Toronto and occupied by Mr and Mrs Edward Callahan.
