Local Mill Reaches Its One Hundredth Birthday
The south village grist mill, a Longstanding landmark, marked 100 years of service. Built 1853 by Br J L Tucker the mill switched from water power to electrical operation two years ago under the Durham County Farmers Co operative now entering its seventh year.

New Procedure May Affect Incorporation in Orono Malton

Orono Orphans Begin Home Playoffs in Port Hope
The Orono Orphans start their OH A Intermediate B playdowns this Saturday at Port Hope for the Ontario Championship. Kingston Army, an all star combo from four army teams, will be the opening opponent in a best of four series with three dates to be announced. Orono led the league all season with 33 points to Port Hope's 29, Cobourg 28, Lindsay 26, and Lakefield 23.

A snow storm caused two power outages and rural cuts in the village. A bridge over Wilmot creek near Newcastle was swept away by flash floods early Tuesday. Gaffney Construction had just poured cement for the structure, totaling a total loss with more cement and equipment left at the scene.

Bailey Bridge removal signals new dam and traffic return
The Bailey Bridge over Mill road was dismantled by the Department of Highways. A new concrete dam and bridge are planned by Public Works to replace the washed out structure, with work to start immediately and traffic hoped to resume before spring break. A February 24 1964 notice details an Odd Fellows and Rebekahs hall project to be built behind Mr Armstongs store. It describes a ground level main floor suitable as a community centre for dances and events with facilities and heating plans. The plan estimates cost near 1209009 with donations and fundraisers such as dances draws and prizes to cover expenses. The Orono Band contributed funds and volunteers provide labor to keep costs down.
