Park Street United Church Reports Strong Finances

A well attended meeting of Park Street United Church groups praised financial gains and missionary support. Reports from the Women's Association Missionary Society Sunday School and Choir highlighted gifts, fund activities, and a thriving Pension Fund despite some shortfalls.

Northumberland and Durham Counties Council finalized appointments for 1947 to high school boards Special Schools Committee and health and welfare bodies. Health Nurses Address On General Child Care

The Mothercraft sponsored evening in Orono Town Hall drew about thirty attendees due to a severe storm. Miss Steele spoke on General Child Care, with nurses Miss Scott and Mrs. Reynolds present. Reeve and Mrs. Woodyard hosted the out-of-town guests overnight. a music program accompanied the event and funds covered expenses with a small surplus.

Orono Police Trustees Form Snow Removal Plan 1947

The Orono Police Trustees met January 27 1947 in the Hydro office. They formed a committee with Wm J Riddell as Chairman and J J Meller as Treasurer. A Highway Department offer to cover half the cost of snow removal was noted. The Highway Department will handle the dangerous tree on Highway No 2 while the Hydro will assist. Signs will be placed to stop garbage dumping in the Tannery Hill fill. ashes and clean dirt only to be accepted there.

Durham Central Agricultural Meeting Elects Officers and Discusses Clean Farm Competition

At a Wednesday gathering in Durham, Garnet B. Rickard was elected president with A. B. Morton and John Cruickshanks as vice presidents. The group debated launching a clean farm competition to replace or supplement the existing field crop contest, citing weed losses of about four dollars per acre as a motivating factor.

Orono Homecraft Guild Plans February Meeting

The Orono Homecraft Guild schedules a February meeting on Thursday the 13th from 3 to 4 30 for young married women to discuss baby care and preschool training. Mrs L Reid leads the Handcraft section and will host a crafts evening with Mr B H Paxton directing in Orono Town Hall 8 pm. A travelling library of 40 books on child training and home crafts will be available at Orono Public Library for four months, free via Ontario Education Department and local library board.

Meetings Planned on High School Districts in United Counties

The United Counties of Northumberland and Durham plan public meetings to discuss forming large High School Districts with a composite high school for each area. The Bowmanville Newcastle Clarke and Derlington Township session is February 11, 1947 at 2.00 pm in Bowmanville High School. Other sessions follow in Port Hope Millbrook and adjacent townships with Education Department representation to explain the plan and gather opinions.

Diesel driven grader arrives in Clarke Township

Orono residents gathered to see a new diesel powered grader with scarifier and snowplow arrive. Clarke Township road superintendent W E Reid led demonstrations and plowed icy roads to showcase the machine’s capabilities. A larger shovel unit is expected in May to enhance road work.

Red Cross Society Campaign for Funds in Ontario

The Canadian Red Cross Society will campaign in Ontario led by Ian R Dowie with provincial quota and support from about 350 Ontario branches. The national budget exceeds five million dollars with funds directed toward war relief and expanding the Outpost Hospital network. Home Nursing First Aid swimming and water safety and Junior Red Cross are among peacetime services expanded in Ontario.
