New Pulpit And Screening Arrive For United Church

The United Church receives a new solid oak pulpit and screening after delays in finishing at Park Street Church. The items arrived last Wednesday and are to be installed before Sunday February 12 with a dedication service planned to celebrate the fixture’s addition to the church interior.

Dr Doug Barnet entertained in Toronto while Mrs C Payne stayed with her mother in Port Hope. Local residents attended a Young Liberals Rally and a Farm Forum at Holdaway home discussing tariff barriers. Sunday School had good attendance and a church lecture by Dr Oke titled Love Our Whole. Card party at Payne residence yielded prizes to Gwen Jones Muriel Mason Bruce Dinner and Truman Austin.

Progressive crokinole and card party heats Kirby

A late Thursday crokinole and card party gathered at the Kirk home. Mrs Patterson Mrs Wan nan and Ms Ross joined Mrs C V Cooper of Orono for afternoon visiting. On Monday the church held its annual meeting reporting a successful year. John Thompson passed away suddenly.

Obituary: John Thompson of Orono in East Wiltby

John Thompson, aged about 80, of Kirby and Orono, died from a heart attack on Friday January 27. Born on a farm north of Taunton, he worked in agriculture then lived on several farms before retiring to Orono. He married Mrs. Bradsley of Orono eight years ago, later moving to Kirby where he resided. He leaves his wife and one sister, Mrs. I. E. Chapman. The Kirby United Church service was led by Rev A E Eustace on January 30, with pallbearers named, and burial in Orono Cemetery.

Local Hockey Admission Price Clarified by Orono Club

Six Escape From Flaming Home Near Tyrone

Mr and Mrs Henry Wood and their four children narrowly escaped a January 25 fire that consumed their three mile northeast Tyrone area home. Fire likely started from overheated pipes. neighbors used a township bulldozer to clear a path as the family moved belongings to a neighbor’s barn and assisted to safety.

Two Training School Boys Sent To Reformatory

Two inmates of the Ontario Boys Training School Bowmanville aged 15 and 16 were ordered transferred to the Guelph Reformatory after an inquiry in Cobourg Police Court. They had escaped Bowmanville January 14 and damaged a Darlingstown Township school during the escape.

Orono Library Board Seeks New Members

The Orono Library Board held its annual meeting on Saturday March 14 selecting E J Hamm and others to leadership roles. Membership fees remain Adults 1.00 and Juniors 251 per year as the board seeks new members while expanding new books.

Thieves Take Bath Tub and Items from Home

A resident described a theft where valuables including a bath tub were stolen from a home. The incident involved delivery items stored in a cellar about 15 days earlier and totaled around 25 dollars in value. No suspects are named in the report.
