Park St United Church Holds Annual Meeting with $500 Balance

The January 22 church meeting reported strong attendance and robust finances with a December 31 1944 balance of 500. Officers for 1945 were named and discussions included possible church renovations. Forty three members are in the armed forces and the Littlewoods were invited to stay for the coming year. An evening carnival at Orono rink was noted nearby.

Conservation of Soil Highlighted at Plowmen Meeting

The Ontario Plowmen’s Association annual meeting at King Edward Hotel Toronto will feature Dr. W A Albrecht as keynote speaker on Why Plow and a debate on Junior Plowing Matches versus Home Plowing. Prof L G Heimpel from Macdonald College will discuss erosion control and farm mechanization trends with a large provincial delegation expected.

Vestry Elects 1945 Church Officers at Orono Meeting

St Saviour s Anglican Church held its annual Vestry meeting at the Parish Hall in Orono on January 24 with strong attendance. A report by the Warden Mr Hall pleased the group and new officers were elected including Rector s Warden George Butters People's Warden F J Hall and several sidesmen auditors delegates and secretaries. Lunch followed the session.

Orono W I Plans Overseas Gum and Cigarette Drive

January meeting of the Orono Women's Institute approved a $25 donation for gum and cigarettes for armed forces overseas. Twelve boxes of fruit and candy were sent to shut-ins at Christmas. Mrs O Boyle identified as Rehabilitation and Post War Project Committee representative.

County Health Plan Endorsed At Cobourg Session

United Counties Council endorsed a county health unit plan explained by Dr. R. P. Vivian. The plan estimates annual health costs near $60 000 with government subsidy half, totaling county outlay under eight tenths of a mill. Staff includes medical officer, two assistants, nursing supervisor, ten public health nurses, three inspectors, plus transport and admin costs.

February Coupon Calendar Continues Through February

The notice lists valid February coupons for butter, preserves, and sugar with dates February 8 15 and 22. Dr Vivian notes long term staffing questions and possible county votes on a health unit, with setup delayed until attendants and details are arranged.

Emergency Knitting Drive Amid War Needs in Ontario

Mrs. J. C. Fraser of the Women's War Work chairs a desperate appeal across Ontario to knit and ship comforts under the 1945 slogan Knit and Ship. The Red Cross warns requisitions from national HQ have emptied surplus, urging branches to replace stock and send wool to Toronto warehouse for wartime seaport shipments. Wool is obtainable from Red Cross branches or Women's Institutes.

Quinte Seed Fair Set for Orono Rabbit Hunt

Orono Fish and Hunt Club directors met at Dr A F McKenzies home to plan a Newcastle area rabbit hunt. With deep snow a thaw is needed. A $2 fee grants entry to the hunt banquet programs and transport. Expect participants from Cobourg Port Hope Toronto Orono Newcastle and about 100 to 150 attendees.

Election of Officers for Good Will Bible Class

Mrs. C S McLaren presides as president with Mrs. K Gamsby as vice president and Mrs. V Phasey as secretary. Mrs. R Moffat becomes treasurer and Mrs. W Hancock pianoist as the class plans 1945 activities. Committees are named for future work.

Police Trustees Name Officers at First 1945 Meeting

The Orono Police Trustees met in N. F. Porter's office on Wednesday evening January 24 with all members present. C. T. Millers was nominated chairman of the Police Trustees and the Hydro Commission. W. J. Riddell was re-appointed treasurer of the Hydro Commission. J. J. Mellor was re-engaged as secretary of the Police Trustees and the Orono Hydro Commission. A. E B. West was re-appointed police constable for 1945 at a salary of 45 dollars. W. J. Riddell was re-appointed caretaker of the fire hall and fire engine at a salary of 100 dollars per year.

Military Recall Rules For Navy and RCAF Discharges

Hon. Humphrey Mitchell outlined recall guidelines for veterans. Those with only Canada service remain eligible if in designated age classes and not medically unfit. Overseas or high seas service exempt from recall unless misconduct or inefficiency terminated service. Navy recall depends on orders to serve outside Canada.
