John Armstrong recalls Wm. Holland known as Bill the Barber who emigrated from London to Orono and ran a barbershop over fifty years. His antics included raccoons in the shop, cutting half of Mr. Kirkland's whiskers, and a famous boat-seat trick. He avoided religion, suffered a stroke, and lamented leaving Orono.

Roseneath Plans New United Church for 1956
The Roseneath United Church congregation approves the construction of a new church in 1956 after a series of meetings. Reeve O J Robins presided with vote counters Flex McMillan and W Varcoe, as part of a special committee from the Building Committee. The vote tally was 538 to 10 in favor.

Orono High School Hosts Gay Christmas Dance
Students of Orono High School held their annual Christmas formal with over two hundred attendees. Music by Bobby Kinsmen of Club Aragon Peterborough and a student chorus floor show complemented a notable duet by Bernice Lunn and Douglas Lycett. Chocolates from C. P. Tyrrell awarded to Betty Bullock and Eric Carleton. Lunch of sandwiches cake and coffee provided during intermission.

Ganaraska Drives Survey for Summer Irrigation Plan

Two Barns Destroyed by Fire Near Newcastle
Fire destroyed two barns belonging to William Dykstra near Newcastle on Wednesday of last week. A cow died in the blaze, but a nearby house was saved by the 14 man Newcastle volunteer brigade aided by Bowmanville. Fire chief Randall controlled traffic as onlookers watched. No damage estimate yet.
