Children enjoyed games and marches led by Mrs D Staples. Refreshments followed for all attendees.

Obituary for Mirwell Hendry of Orono and Bowmanville
Mirwell Hendry of Orono died December 7 at Memorial Hospital in his 75th year. He and wife Annabelle Erskine Hendry lived in Orono five years after farming 85 years on the Lake Shore, Newcastle. A 32 degree Mason and Orono United Church adherent, he was born in Ayrshire Scotland and served in the US Army 1915–1918, stationed in New Mexico, before moving to Newcastle. Survived by wife, daughter Edith Murray, son Archie with NRC Ottawa, and stepchildren Annabelle Garnet Rickard Robert E Dr John E A W Hendry, Newcastle. Funeral December 9 at Northcutt and Smith Bowmanville with Rev John Kitchen officiating. Floral tributes from Jerusalem Lodge Bowmanville and Durham Lodge Newcastle amid many others. Pallbearers listed.

Canada Farm Loan Board reports 1955 lending totals
The Canada Farm Loan Board issued its twenty sixth annual report for the year ended March 31, 1955. Loans approved totaled 8,225,500 with 52.5 percent for land and related debt, 16.5 percent for livestock and equipment, 28 percent to pay debts, and 3 percent for sundry uses. At March 31, 1955 the board held 18,111 farm loans totaling 40,120,336 in Canada, the highest ever. Farmers may borrow up to 10,000 on first mortgage at 5 percent for 24 years or up to 12,000 on combined first and second mortgages.

Orono Badminton Tournament Attracts Twenty Five Players
The Orono Badminton Club opened its season with a mixed doubles event and ping-pong games, awarding top honors to Mrs. R C Forrester and Mr James Eeves. George Collins was elected president and Mrs A L Hooey secretary treasurer for 1956, with committees named for upkeep, refreshments and events. The club plans two new nets and aims to invite an outside club early next year.

The Orono Amateur Athletic Association expects an early opening if cold weather continues. Ice is forming and a good base exists, with dressing rooms updated and new stoves installed. Public skating is planned for Saturday with season tickets at 3 dollars for individuals and 5 dollars for families.
