A cheerful Christmas message extends season's wishes to readers, advertisers, correspondents, and all who assisted during the year. The note expresses gratitude for support and collaboration and goodwill for the holidays.
At the Women's Institute gathering in the Council Chamber, a pleasant meeting approved sending a bale of bedd ing to Rainy River fire sufferers and organizing Christmas boxes for the sick and shut ins. Members heard a Bible reading, carol singing, and a poem from Tony Wons, while plans to dramatize Home and School Movement founding and a school cooperative message were discussed.
The Christmas exam results for Orono Continuation School list numerous students with marks across grades TX X IDM and forms IV and W. Notable scores include Donald Straples 88.6, Adele Morton 81.3, Margaret Roy 28.5, and others from 12.0 to 88.6. Parents are urged to review individual reports for each student.
James Burgess died Tuesday December 13 in Orono at age eighty four. He lived most of his life in Clarke Township and served as Justice of the Peace. Survived by wife Mary A. Luxon, siblings, five daughters, two sons, and nine grandchildren. Funeral conducted by Rev S Litthewood at his residence with burial in Orono Cemetery.
Local notices report recovering children John Cathcart and Donald Little after hospital stays. A Sunday sermon centered on Ahab Jezebel and Elijah. Funeral of Clarke resident James Burgess held in Orono. Sixth Line Christmas tree program featured Fooling Aunt Julia. Kendal Entertainment presented Puss in Boots with Gladys Ardin Catherine Stewart supervising. Santa distributed gifts to children amid holiday cheer.
Clarke Township council met December 1 1938 with full attendance. Highlights include bids from Ontario Bridge Co for snow fences, juror selectors certified, by law set for nominating candidates, and multiple tax and grant approvals including a Kendal Public Library request and a police board credit.
The Woman's Auxiliary met Tuesday afternoon at Park Street United Church basement. Devotional led by Mrs. Davey, with Mrs. Hoar at piano. Officers elected: President Mrs. W. M. Stuitt. 1st Vice-President Mrs. Littlewood. 2nd Vice-President Mrs. J. J. Mellor. 3rd Vice-President Mrs. E. Sear. Secretary Mrs. W. Hoar. Corresponding Sec Mrs. N. Porter. Treasurer Mrs. J. Dickson. Assistant Treasurer Miss L. Allin. Minutes, bills, and reports discussed. annual gifts and missions funds approved.
The Mission Band and Christmas Tree event take place tonight at 7:45 PM at St United Church Park. Admission is 15e with children admitted free.
Tyrrells Drug Store presents the latest popularity contest standings for girls and boys. Top names include Audrey Billings Shirley Flintoff Lorna Lewis Helen Lewis and Marlene Cantrell among girls, with Gerald Rainey Ray West Donnie Lynch John Forrester Geo Shaw and Billy Hooey among boys.
After a constitution reading by Rev. Littlewood, the president set the next meeting for January 8 at 2 30 pm to install officers and close the year book. The session closed with a doxology and prayer by Mr. Littlewood.
The Relief Committee of the W A of Park Street United Church held a quilting bee in the church basement on December 14. After a dainty supper, President Mrs W M Stutt announced a farewell for Mrs Almeda Henry. An autograph album and purse were presented, and Mrs Henry invited friends to visit her in Toronto.
