Orono Santa Parade Sets for 2 P M Saturday Thrills

Orono Chamber of Commerce sponsors a Santa parade this Saturday at 2 PM. Orono High School Majorettes lead, followed by the Orono Band and four festive floats. Clowns, reindeer sleigh, gift bags, and meeting Santa inaugurate Orono’s first Santa Claus parade with community groups aiding the event.

Stores stay open evenings through Christmas in Orono

OronoBusinessSection stores will remain open every evening starting this Thursday. The extended hours follow prior practice to help shoppers finish Christmas purchases before December 25.

Orono W.A. Plans Christmas Aid And 1958 Officers

The Orono Women’s Association held a Thursday afternoon meeting in the Sunday School room. Devotional by Mrs. Rainey followed by readings and a Christmas program. They discussed sending a bale of clothing and canned foods to the Fred Victor Mission and approved donations to March of Dimes and Scott Mission. A bank balance of 680.83 was reported and 1958 officers were named for installation in January.

Orono Girls Hold Christmas Vesper Service

The Canadian Girls in Trafnihe and Explorer group hosted the annual Christmas Vesper at United Church Orono on Sunday December 8. The event featured a processional hymn, prayers, readings, and carols including Silent Night and Joy to the World with candlelight. A social hour followed with Women’s Association hosting. Mission Band members led readings and shared Christmas greetings.

Orono Odd Fellows Hold December Dance and Turkey Draw

The Orono Odd Fellows Lodge hosted their annual December dance in the hall drawing twenty five turkeys. About 150 attended with Farrow's orchestra providing music. Six birds were kept for local families while the rest left the area. Winners included G I Boothby Toronto and Andrea K Hadley Toronto among others. The lodge thanks all who bought tickets and attended.

Patton and Duncan wed at Orono United Church Parsonage

Roy Patton son of John Patton and the late Mrs Patton of Orono married Dolly Duncan of Sussex New Brunswick on Saturday December 14 1957. Rev B Long officiated and a reception followed at Pontypool hosted by Mrs J Malley and Mrs R White. The couple will reside in Orono.

Tamblyn Hosts Large Gathering For Cousins Evening

The home of Mr and Mrs Ivison Tamblyn hosted about 50 cousins for a Saturday night reunion. Attendees included Prof and Mrs F A Knox Kingston and others from Lindsay Peterborough Toronto Whitby and Hamilton. A well organized game followed by lunch and Christmas carols marked a very delightful evening.

Two Area Schools Seek Withdrawal from Clarke Township

At the Clarke Township council meeting Port Granby and Antioch delegations urged withdrawing their sections from the Township School Area. Petitions signed by 62 and 69 ratepayers respectively supported withdrawal with a few voting to remain. The council agreed to meet with the Education Minister to discuss approvals and related school-area issues.

Police Trustees Plan for 1958 in Orono Area

The Orono Police Trustees held a meeting to outline work for the coming year and set a budget. They received the Cenotaph Committee’s transfer of the Orono Cenotaph to the village and will appoint a memorial committee in January. The fire chief outlined department needs and equipment costs, including an auxiliary pumper and gas mask. The group plans to engage the Department of Planning and Development to set up a broader planning area and to seek a Pedlar's By-law license program starting January 1. Further budget talks covered road work, sidewalks, ditching, and light improvements with an inaugural meeting scheduled for January.

The December Wo mans Christian Temperance Union meeting in the Sunday School Auditorium featured carols led by Mrs Walsh devotionals by Mrs Allan, and a treasurer report. Members approved minutes, discussed sending ten dollars to the Pudget and a donation to Hillcrest Lodge Port Hope, plus a candle lighting service and Christmas readings.

Orono Chamber Plans Parade and Annual Meeting

The Orono Chamber of Commerce held its monthly dinner meeting with most members present to finalize plans for the Santa Claus parade this Saturday at 2 PM. They also organized details for the January 13 dinner meeting at 6:30 PM and invited members to attend.
