Pictures Of New Brunswick Shown At Social Evening

The Woman's Association of Park St Church hosted the first social of the season with moving pictures by Dr. Devitt of Bowmanville and Mr BR Carveth of Newcastle. Scenes of New Brunswick rural life plus animal footage from Knox Farm delighted attendees. Vocal solos by James Dyer, guitar by Mrs Drummond and an impromptu trio and social music followed, ended with a lunch in the Sunday School room.

Newtonville Social Activities And Women’s Institute Meeting

Newtonville notice describes Mr Rowland Burley visiting Port Hope with his aunt Mrs George Owens on Tuesday. U S Community Club held December 9 with Neil Ander named convenor. Rev H A Bunt spoke on a much enjoyed topic. Women’s Institute December meeting at Mrs J C Hancock’s Newcastle with 21 members and 3 visitors. Discussion on helping European children. committee formed to arrange a parcel including Mrs Johnston, Mrs Pearce, Mrs Dennis, Mrs Ferguson. January plan to mail a cash donation to Port Hope Children’s Aid Society. Convenor Mrs Haigh led the program Historical Research. Mrs Johnston recounted the morning session.

Christmas Party and Farm Forum Notes In Kendal

Community events in Kendal include a Sunday School Christmas party on December one at 8 pm with a tree and performances. Farm Forum at Evan Quentrill home discussed community advancement and future reporting to W A and W L groups. Pictures by Rev Bunt and Mr Cerveth drew praise with Kawartha Lakes and Search for Os features. Mr and Mrs Swarbrick were honored with a gift and a warm reception.

Christmas program delight noted in Port Hope visit

Mrs. Ernest Bryson visited Port Hope relatives last week. The school children staged a Christmas program last Friday evening to a splendid success. John McKelvey and sister Marian McKelvey of Bowmanville and Mrs. Greenwood were guests of Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Brimacombe.

W I Ladies Host Readings and Lunch at Royal York

Mrs Percy Brown and Mrs Ferguson hosted readings while Mrs F Gilmer described the W I luncheon at the Royal York Hotel. Newcastle group served lunch. The next meeting is set for Jan 21 at Mrs Chas Morris's home.

Service Club Dance And Draw In Orono Town Hall

The 1.0.0.K. Orono club hosted a successful dance and prize draw on Friday night December 12 at Orono Town Hall. Prizes included turkeys geese and apples with winners from Oshawa Toronto Peterborough and Orono. Betty’s doll and ten dollars added to the evening’s drawings. Roy Forester led a seven piece band and $440.53 was deposited after deductions for prizes.

Elliott Couple Celebrates Golden Wedding in Brandon Manitoba

Mr and Mrs James Elliott observed their Golden Wedding with a gathering at their 419 Tenth Street Brandon Manitoba home on December 5 1947. A Sunday family reunion followed where Mrs Elliott received a gold wrist watch and Mr Elliott a gold ring bearing the Royal Black Knights of Ireland insignia.

Cornelius J Hughson, Orono's Grand Old Man, Passes

Cornelius J Hughson aged 100, longtime Orono resident and former North of town farmer, died peacefully at his Orono home on December 10. He was born June 12, 1847, joined the Methodist Episcopal Church as a youth and remained a member eight decades. Survived by children Alice Sandercock Florence Hamm Sidney Toronto and Jennie Richardson, with Park St United Church conducting funeral December 15. Interment in Orono Cemetery.

Annual White Gift Service At United Church Sunday School

The White Gift service drew a large crowd with students, adults, carols, and gift presentations. Two lighted trees, star decorations, evergreens, and silver trimmings enhanced the service. The community is invited to a Christmas program next Sunday at 2 30 PM with all classes contributing numbers.

Season Tickets For Children Available At Local Rink

Through Mrs Eve lyn Hall at Ralphs Hardware the Orono Amateur Athletic Association offers season tickets for children only. Prices vary by family size with no adult tickets. three or more children total five dollars. Tickets are non transferable and provide free public skating and eligibility for Midget Juvenile hockey or spectating, with some games excluded. Contact Mrs Hall promptly for full value.

W C T U Meeting Fetes Christmas Carols and Reports

The W C T U met on Tuesday December 16 opening with Christmas carols. Mrs Delve gave the devotional on the birth of Jesus. Miss Stella Best sang a Christmas solo. Mrs Walsh presided and reports noted three Sunday School temperance essays. A $19 budget gift was sent to Budget Fund.

Orono united Church turns festive with music and plays

A December 11 1947 Orono program featured the Bible Class social with songs readings duets and a Christmas carol finale led by Rev A E Eustace. The night included readings by Mrs Wm Davey Miss Stella Best and Mrs Jackson and a humorous skit lineup from the Continua tion School group led by Bill Moffat.

The Orono Amateur Athletic Association hosts Roy Forrester and his Music for a round and square dance at the Town Hall on Monday December 26. Admission is 50 cents per person.

Certificates Presented At Durham Holstein Banquet

At the Annual Turkey Dinner of the Durham County Holstein Club held December 10 at Welcome United Church, 140 attended. G L Kellogg presided as fieldman F Roy Ormiston presented certificates for long-time production to James T Brown of Gedar Dele Stock Farms and J A Jose, Newcastle, the latter receiving two. Brown earned a Silver Seal for an all-time milk total of 161 004 pounds with 16138 pounds in a single year at 8.8 percent, the highest lifetime record for a cow classified as Excellent. J H Jose received certificates for Aoice Feyne Burke and Mina Fayne Korndyke, both full sisters to Olive Burke Payne. The Cedar Dale Stock Farms Cow Cedar Dale Man-O-War Mary was also noted. Premier Greeder Banner awarded to A Muir & Sons by National Holstein Director Jas T Brown. fifth straight year for the award. Guests included three Calf Club boys Ralph Larmer, Dalton Dowell, and Murray Lord, shown by E A Summers. Judge M S Mott of Toronto Juvenile Court spoke on security, play, and meaning of life. Rev D R Oke introduced him. A sing-along led by M Bickel and two solos by Mrs A Broadbent closed the evening.
