Fatal Fall From Scaffold At Bowmanville Hospital

Reports state Mr Russell Best fell from a scaffold while assisting on a Centre Street house in Orono near December 3 or 9. He slid from a slanted roof edge about twelve feet to frozen ground, dying en route to Oshawa Hospital. Mr Stainton aided by leaping through a window. Witness Dr McKenzie provided first aid.

Orone Homecraft Guild Meeting Recalls Christmas Preparations

The Orone Homecraft Guild met on Wednesday November 27 focusing on Christmas planning. Mrs McGinnis shared tested recipes for fruit cakes puddings and beverages while Mrs Rolph outlined table settings etiquette and hostess duties. The group appreciated humor and leaders efforts and styles for the open December session with an exhibit and pattern circulation.

Calf Club Boy Nets 4870 For His Steer At King’s Guineas

John Kinsman of C morarty Ontario won the King's Guineas prize of 250 and 5.50 a pound at auction for his 840 pound Shorthorn Levelta Gem sold to T Eaton Co for Sunnybrook hospital. Esther Dowling of Alvinston took second with a 900 pound Angus sold for 1.60 a pound and 1440. Robert J O Neill Denfield claimed third with a 1010 pound Hereford at 0.60 a pound totaling 606. Forty three entries were auctioned with prices from 18 to 30 cents per pound. The event aims to boost beef calf club work and junior Farmer standards.

Woman's Missionary Society Elect 1947 Officers

The December meeting of the Woman's Missionary Society was led by President Mrs M H Staples. A Christmas program and candlelight service followed with readings, carols, and prayers. Officers for 1947 were elected, including Delve as President and Staples as 3rd Vice President.

Hughes and MacWhirter wedding in Park Street church

On November 13 Sidney Hughes of Orono wed Rhoda MacWhirter formerly of Glasgow Scotland at Park Street United Church with Rev Littlewood officiating. Bridesmaid Jean Lewis and groomsman Thomas Lewis attended. reception at the Lewis home followed by a brief honeymoon.

Durham County Club host features Russian visit and tributes

The Durham County Club of Toronto held its November meeting at ODE headquarters. Dr Willard Brewing of Toronto spoke on a 1934 Russia tour with observations on communism and culture. The program included Miss Kathleen Busby and pianist Edgar Goodaire, and Marilyn Leask received a engraved locket for a speech contest victory. The group also mourned two longtime members, Dr Walter Willard and Rhys Fairbairn, and closed with Auld Lang Syne.

Salvation Army War Services to be wound up this year

Lt Col William Dray says the Salvation Army War Services Department will close by year end after seven years of activity. The service reported handling over $50,000,000 for armed forces in Canada and abroad with 700 representatives in war zones and across the country providing meals, canteens, entertainment, religious services, recreation huts and sleeping quarters.

Orono Falls to Bowmanville in Opening Game

Orono hosted Bowmanville last Tuesday night and lost 42 to 22 in the first public outing for the Orono team. Arthur McLaren led Orono with 8 points as Bowmanville opened a big first quarter lead and held on despite a late rally by Orono.

Denny And Harry Lynch Honored In Toronto

Denny and Harry Lynch were guests of Dr. and Mrs. L. B. Williams in Toronto on December 2. They attended The Men of the Trees meeting where Denny spoke on The Maple Tree and the boys performed a cornet and tenor horn duet. The Lychs received gifts from Gallery of Canadian History and Miss Helen Jones presented Mrs. Lynch with a bouquet. Hon. John R. MacNichol MP delivered an illustrated address on conservation and development with pictures of the Northwest Territories and Alaska.

The Royal Winter Fair spotlighted Invasion, a harness horse bred in Clarke and owned by Mrs. Laula Long Combs of Lee's Summit, Missouri. Bred by Os, who sold him at age four, Invasion has never been beaten by any trainer at major fairs including Philadelphia Chicago New York and the Royal Winter Fair earning its owner significant prizes. The breeder Os is offered 50 dollars if eligible, while Invasion’s asking price is 25 000 dollars. Betty Axworthy is noted as a dam of Invasion. Os also previously owned Hazel H and Micka, promising future entries in harness racing.
