Clarke Progressive Conservatives Hold Annual Meeting In Orono

Clarke Township Progressive Conservative Association met in Orono town hall on Saturday November 27 with about seventy five members present. Dr Percy Vivian Minister of Health, guest speaker, spoke on post war jobs and party strategy as party officials and polling subdivision officers were elected. The meeting closed after God Save the King and a social lunch.

No Canadian Casualties In Mediterranean Sinking

National Defence Headquarters announced there were no Canadian casualties linked to the reported sinking of a vessel in the Mediterranean. The statement followed inquiries after reports that several Canadian nurses were aboard the ship.

Drownings Reported After Pier Incident in Cobourg Harbor

A double drowning occurred Monday night in Cobourg Harbor as James Carr 63 Port Dalhousie chief engineer on the sand sucker O Connor Dick and George Alfred 55 Cobourg war veteran reportedly stepped from the pier into dark waters. Workmen John MacDonald and John Forge raised the alarm, dragging Carr from the harbor then recovering the second body later.

Counties Council Receives Resolutions and Budget Requests

The November session of the United Counties for Northumberland and Durham opened with numerous communications and resolutions from county councils referred to Finance, Roads and Bridges, Schools, and Legislative committees. Highlights include requests for lower loan interest, grants for Legion and naval committees, funding for children's aid investigations, school board representation, land sale issues, and a push for quarterly highway subsidies. The clerk warned 9 of 24 municipalities to file overdue assessment returns under the Municipal Act.

Everett Brown And Howard Forder Lead Judging Contest

Everett Brown of Orono led the senior class with 832 points at the judging contest in Orono on Saturday November 27. The event drew junior and senior farmers judging cattle sheep and swine with awards going to Harold Forder Glen Hancock and others in dairy cattle and sheep categories.

Further Controls Necessary On Evaporated Milk Sales

Wartime Prices and Trade Board limits evaporated milk sales to non essential users in abundant milk areas. Free sales banned in restricted zones covering most of Southern Ontario, parts of Quebec and western Canada urban districts. Skimmed milk now under regulations with whole milk. Applications for priority cards or special permits to local ration boards.

Ontario potato crop estimated at 17 143 000

The Ontario Crop Seeds and Weeds Branch reports the 1943 potato crop valued at 17 143 000 dollars, up nearly 5 million from 1942 and the highest since 1926. Despite the low acreage, yields were higher, with better quality and strong demand across markets.
