Better Vegetable Control Planned by Prices Board

The Wartime Prices and Trade Board announces a program with trade partners to ensure a reasonable supply and fair distribution of staple fruits and vegetables through winter and spring. Price ceilings are in effect for potatoes onions turnips cabbage beets carrots parsnips peaches pears plums grapes citrus fruits and bananas. Canada expects a normal winter and early spring supply from the United States and other foreign sources to meet its normal share.

Butter Production Down In Ontario In October

Ontario creamery butter production fell to 6,213,900 pounds in October 1943, down 10.5 percent from October 1942. Ten month total reached 74,649,000 pounds, up 4.0 percent from the prior year. November 1 stocks stood at 8,527,000 pounds, lower than October 1 but above November 1942 levels.

The Orono Hydro Commission met Monday evening in N. F. Porter’s office with all members present and approved buying a 21000 Victory Bond, increasing the local investment in Canada’s war effort to 3500. The ledger shows payments to H E P C 375.87 B P U 116.67 Victory Loan Bond 1000 N Porter rent 6.00 J J Mellor salary 25.00 total 1523.54. Bank balance stands at 1372.92. A December meeting is set for Monday December 20.

Mrs James L Powers Dies After Illness At 90

Mrs. James L Powers died after a two week illness at her son Cecil L Powers home in Orono on Friday November 19 1948 aged 90. Born January 7 1852 near Kirby she married James L Powers in 1872 and lived in Manila Lindsay and Kirby before moving to Orono eight years ago. Survived by son Cecil L Powers and daughter Mrs Art Robbins of Leskard the deceased was active in the United Church and local welfare. Service held November 22 at her son's home conducted by Rev S Littlewood with interment in Orono Cemetery. Pallbearers listed.

Maple Syrup Coupon Reform Allows Larger Purchases

Ottawa reports the price board raised the D coupon value from 12 to 20 ounces starting March 2 to enable larger maple syrup buys when the season opens. The last D coupon will be valid March 2 instead of March 30, and eight new coupons buy one gallon. Families can stock up, with mail order plans to ease distribution and a system for handling coupons to be announced.

Orone Women's Institute Holds November Meeting

The Orone Women's Institute met on Friday afternoon November 19. A quilt was tied and another quilted. Mrs. D. G. Hooper donated a lovely quilt. War Work Committee reported nine quilts ready for Red Cross relief. Mrs. C. W. Rolph gave a partial report on the Toronto convention and will finish later. Rolph leads Christmas Cheer boxes and will select assistants.

The National Purchasing Committee of the Canadian Red Cross supervised purchases totaling over twelve and a quarter million dollars during 1942, comprising 1,825 separate orders for materials.

War Saving Stamps On Christmas Cards And Gifts

Canadians are asked to include a War Saving Stamp on every card and present this Christmas. A $1,000,000 drive runs from now until Christmas as the fifth wartime Christmas. The Stationery, Book and Gift trades join with the National Department of Finance to sponsor the effort.

Rural Life Conference to Meet At Orono December 2

Orono hosts a Rural Life Conference December 2 with sessions at 2 30 p m and 7 30 p m. The event aims to study rural problems and postwar conditions, sponsored by the United Church Rural Life Department and open to all rural groups in Durham County and nearby townships. Dr Thomas Tripp will lead with two other leaders, and a picnic supper will be provided. Convenors are Rev S Littlewood and Mr M Staples.

Toronto Couple Reach $13500 Settlement in Auto Injury Suit

Mrs Evelyn Craibbe and her husband Bruce Craibbe of Toronto settled with John B Lundy of Port Perry for 13500 including costs in an assize court in Toronto after Evelyn Craibbe suffered leg fractures pelvic fractures head injury and a crushed elbow when struck by Lundys car on April 6 1942 at Yonge Street and Davisville Avenue.

At a Bowmanville meeting, Hospital Board President Major Joe O'Neill outlined the growing ward needs and patient origins from Darlington Clarke Cartwright and surrounding areas. He noted 18 beds plus nursery and rising monthly patient days while urging municipalities to share expenses to ease overcrowding and preserve nursing staff.
