Women's Institutes Convention Report From Toronto November

Orono Chamber Plans Christmas Decorations and Local Improvements

Orono plans five strings of lights across the street and a cedar-wood street display. A Christmas Tree will be set outside the town hall with colored lights and candy for children. Committees will seek road improvements on 6th Line and discuss Bank of Commerce hours to boost Saturday business.

Durham Second In Stock Judging At Winter Fair

At the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto the Live Stock Judging Competition drew thirty counties. Middlesex won its second title in five years with Durham in second. Durham entrants Gordon Falls, Millbrook. Lloyd Metcalf, Bowmanville. Howard Millson, Enniskillen. Howard Millson placed 11th, Gordon Wallis 12th, Lloyd Metcalf 16th. Durham’s three boys were the only county trio in the top twenty prize group.

William James Cowan Dies at Orono After Illness

William James Cowan aged 75, born November 27, 1863 in Clarke Township, died November 26 at his Orono home after a brief illness. He farmed in Clarke before moving to Orono twelve years ago, a descendant of pioneering Cowans. Funeral held November 29 at his home with Rev. S Littlewood officiating, burial at Orono Cemetery. He leaves wife four daughters Greta Stevens Audrey Turner Olive Dooley Hazel Hunter and one brother Thomas. Pallbearers included Fred Lovekin Bert Reid and others.

All Saints A Y P A Variety Minstrels Delight Oshawa Audience

The All Saints A Y P A Variety Minstrels drew strong applause in Oshawa with Sydney Erskine directing and Mrs Clifford Brown piano and play. Lawrence Age hosted. Soloists June Allan and Stan Martin earned praise for tap and bones as the chorus delivered polished singing and humor. The show ranged from sentimental ballads to comic numbers.

County Road Commission to Grow From Three to Four Members

The Road and Bridge Committee recommends expanding the county road commission from three to four members and bringing 16 12 miles of township roads into the county system. A new three and two year term plan for commissioners is proposed with the warden as ex officio member, to begin after this year.

Fire at Oshawa Organ and Piano Shop Guts Large Edition

Fire officials report Oshawa fire crews fought lines of hose to control a blaze at the Organ and Piano Company shop. The four storey edition burned, the late shop and roof saved, wind spread embers as crowds watched. No workers were displaced and business expected to continue.

Eight Years Time for Abduction and False Pretense Case

Charles James Hubbell was convicted in Oshawa Police Court by Magistrate F. Ebbs. He received five years for abducting Elizabeth Symes and three years concurrently for false pretenses after posing as Dr J J Aubbell from Timmins. The report also notes a local school literary society meeting in Orono with student performances and calls for public support.
