District President Visits Orono Women's Institute

The Orono Women's Institute held its regular August meeting in the council chamber with Mrs. E. Dean presiding. West Durham District leader Mrs. S. E. Werry of Solina spoke on the opening ode and on the Institute motto Mother in conjunction with For Home and Country, with a garden quiz contest producing a four-way tie.

Drono Horticultural Society Flower Show Planned

The Drono Horticultural Society announces a flower show on Thursday September 6 at 8 00 p m in the basement of Park Street Church. Members may exhibit any flower variety with prizes listed for best collections Gladiolus Asters and table bouquet. Produce from Victory gardens judged and prizes awarded. Entries due by 7 30 p m. Show venue details follow.

W C T U Holds Hampton Park Meeting

W C T U members from Orono joined Hampton group at Hampton Park on August 21. The program included prayers, a psalm reading, a 60th anniversary note, wartorn lands discussion, temperance reading by Denny Lynch, musical selections by Denny and Harry Lynch, contests, and a picnic lunch.

Churchill Receives Freedom of Bristol and Honors

Picture shows Mr. Churchill in Bristol for the Freedom of the City ceremony. As university Chancellor he conferred honorary Doctor of Laws degrees on Mr. A. V. Alexander First Lord of the Admiralty and on Mr. Ernest Bevin Minister of Labor. Cheering crowds line the streets as the Prime Minister passes.

Visitors to Mr and Mrs Howard Walsh included Miss Maud Gardiner from Welcome and her Rochester brother in law Mr Cecil Walsh from Chicago and Mr Clem Webb from Brantford with Rev Willis Hancock of Vancouver Denny Lynch performed temperance songs at Tyrone Sunday School on August 12 and gave a temperance speech winning a silver medal at Orono. Mr and Mrs W H Clarke of Deseronto left for London after visiting in town with John Fiske and former Methodist pastor Rev Adams. water sources noted as underground. C T Miller offered water witching locating and cost estimates for wells with free consultation. Mr and Mrs Jack Walsh and Mr and Mrs Bill Lynch spent the weekend exploring Muskoka Lake district up to Parry Sound with fishing swimming and a Lake Muskoka row at Bala. A family gathering honored Navigator LeRoy Brown recently returned from overseas with Lieut Brown's birthday celebrated at Kurv Inn. Park Street Church thanks Dr McCulloch for gifts of gladioli from his garden used to decorate the church and for visiting ill and shut-in villagers.

Auction of Mr Chas Dix Household Furnishings in Newtonville

Public auction in Newtonville on Saturday September 1 1945 sells the entire household contents from Mr Chas Dix including an electric stove modern kitchen suite walnut dining suite studio couch radios beds wardrobes dressers and a lawn mower. Auctioneer Harold Caswell writes this is the finest lot of furniture offered in the district in some time. Sale starts at 1 oclock with clerk Jack Reid assisting.

Possible daylight saving time lift debated in Canada

A special committee weighs ending the wartime order that requires daylight saving across Canada. If lifted, municipal authorities would decide whether to adopt daylight time or keep standard time to fit local needs. Compulsory daylight saving began in spring 1941.

Fitting Service Marks End Of Hostilities

Park Street Church held a postwar service marking the cessation of World War I hostilities. The gathering included Canadian Legion members, Reserve Army, Girl Guides, and returning servicemen, with unity shown by banners and a dedicatory prayer for the flags. The program featured Mr Mellor, Mrs Hall, and Mr Logan, ending with a hymn about a loftier race and freedom.
