Orono Street Fair Draws Largest Crowd on Main Street

Orono Chamber of Commerce third annual Street Fair drew an estimated crowd over three thousand on Main Street. The event featured rides, games, prizes, candy booth, and a mobile stage with Vince Mountford and Seppo Leivo among acts. Profit reportedly around $2000, exceeding previous years.

Charles Webber Wins Travel Trailer at Local Draw

Charles Webber of Orono won a travel trailer after a drawing by George Wade just before noon. Ticket number 4110 secured the prize as the night featured music for round and square dancing for late stayers.

Kendal Bantams Capture Lakeshore Championship Title

The Kendal Bantam Baseball Club won the lakeshore Bantam DP league championship by defeating Courtice in a best of five series. Kendal led 2-0 after Courtice initially took a 2-0 lead, then Kendal scored four in the seventh to seal a 4-3 win in Courtice with John Quantrill earning the win and Ray Pickle taking the loss.

Mary Ann Armstrong and Richard Preston Baxter married at Orono United Church at 3 pm on Saturday. The couple will honeymoon in the Pocono Mountains before residing at 60 Glen Road Hamilton Apt 3. Attendants included Margaret Arnold and Heather Wilson with family members among the wedding party.

Garnet Rickard Tops Drone Fair Field Crop Competition

The Durham Central Agricultural Society reports the Field Crop Competition results led by Garnet B. Rickard of Bowermanville RR 4. Other top finishers include Bruce Tink, John Cruickshank, Gray Brothers, John Rickard and several residents of Orono Newcastle and Hampton in a crowded entries list.

Walter J Helm Bequeaths 100000 to Port Hope Hospital

The late Walter J Helm leaves 100000 to Port Hope Hospital in trust for life interest until his grandchild dies with income paid in perpetuity to the hospital. Helm who died June 5 also directs 100000 to the University of Toronto and a residue to the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. His son John Forrest Helm of Toronto and daughter Mrs. J S Greer of Vancouver share substantial interests with their children.

Oshawa Fair Opens Friday for 53rd Annual Event

The Oshawa and District Fall Fair runs August 18 to 20 at Alexandra Park under the South Ontario Agricultural Society. Farmers from across the region exhibit livestock and produce, with entries from Niagara peninsula Barrie Galt and Western Ontario. Secretaries say over 95 000 free school tickets were distributed and admission remains free if a ticket is lost. The pony show will be larger with extra prizes from the Canadian Pony Society and more than 250 horses and ponies plus hundreds of other animals on display.

Clarke Township Hall Interior Gets Fresh Paint and Upgrades

The Clarke Township Hall has a newly bright interior with two coats of light green on walls and a darker lower section. Upgraded features include a re-stained ceiling and a planned new lighting system for the main auditorium this year along with prior stage renovations and new curtains.

Durham Dominates Peterborough Exhibition Junior Day

Durham County earned another win at the Peterborough Exhibition Junior Day led by Harold Yellowlees. Enniskillen’s 632 topped the overall scores of 700 while Donald Winslow finished third in the Junior Division with 570. Durham placed in the top half among 130 competitors. 80 percent plus of the Homemaking Club entrants from Sharon Bigelow Bethany and Helen Knox Hampton also participated.

Orono High School to stage The Twelve Pound Look at festival

Orono High School presents The Twelve Pound Look by J. M. Barrie directed by Wanda Hobbs at the Orono Fair Drama Festival. Set in early 20th century London the cast includes Susan Major as Lady Sims Roma Glanville as Kate Ross Tamblyn as Tombes and Norman Rickaby as Sir Harry Sims. The festival runs September 8 9 and 10 at 8 15 p m in Town Hall with admission 95 cents for adults and 50 cents for children. An award pottery plaque for diction will be donated by E J P Morey of Bowmanville and is displayed in the library window.

Orono Fair Horticulture Promotes Junior Scrapbook Exhibit

More than 70 district tobacco farmers attended a plot meeting at Glen Atkins farm Centreton to study new tobacco varieties and causes of graying. The Orono Horticultural Society expands the fair with a junior scrapbook exhibit for youths up to 14, detailing leaves, roadside weeds, blooms, and garden plants with judging emphasizing neatness.

Juveniles To Play Here Saturday In Baseball Series

The Orono Juvenile Baseball club travelled to Knock near Barrie Ontario to open a OBA series. Knock won the first game 14 to 3 Wednesday afternoon. The second game will be in Orono this Saturday at 3 00 pm in the Park.

Orono Chamber Bikes Rodeo Draws 22 Children

Twenty-two children from the Village competed at the Orono race track in the Fairgrounds rodeo sponsored by the Orono Chamber of Commerce with help from Bowdenville Kinsmen Club and the Ontario Provincial Police. The event tested balance braking signaling and obstacle navigation with a finals half mile race and awards to winners.
