Orono Continuation School Middle School Exam Results

The Department of Education release lists Orono Continuation School Middle School examination results with certificates available from Secretary R. R. Waddell. Principal Rosborough to consult with students and parents on return. Names and subjects show honours and credit levels for many students.

Trull Townley Matrimony Quietly Held In Fenelon Falls

Miss Cathrine Louise Townley married Lloyd A. Trull in a quiet ceremony at the bride’s mother Mrs. Arthur L. Townley’s Oak Street home Fenelon Falls on August 10. Rev J M Ward officiated with Edith Trull playing music. The couple plans a Kingston home after a Quebec motor trip. Mr. Trull is a Queen’s graduate.

Orono Hydro Purchase Discussed by Police Trustees

On Friday evening the Orono Police Trustees Board met in the Orange hall to examine the Hydro question. Nattress of the Ontario Hydro Electric Power Commission Toronto and Mr George Chase of Bowmanville reviewed figures showing the village would have profit if it had bought the system in 1938 with over 10000 in net earnings. The current system would cost a little over 8000 and bonds could be redeemed at any time. Chase noted the system is in better shape now than ten years ago with profits of 500 in 1917 rising to 2279.05 in 1988. The board moved to ask Hydro Commission to draft bylaws for Clarke Township Council.

Canada to launch four minesweepers and two destroyers

The Royal Canadian Navy to launch HMC S Gaspe in Quebec the third of four minesweepers replacing old trawlers. HMC S Nootka to follow in North Vancouver. Fundy and Comox launched. all four to be in commission by year end. Ottawa and Restigouche to arrive from England, join crews at Esquimalt.

Exonerated in fatal car accident near Port Hope

John Paterson of Montreal was absolved by a coroner's jury at Port Hope of blame in the death of 89 year old Albert Ellis. Ellis walked into the path of Patersons car west of Port Hope and died from a fractured skull and chest injuries. Albert Thompson testified Ellis rode in a car he stopped to let him cross the highway. Despite warnings Ellis stepped into the path of another vehicle.

Schoolhouse to Go as Four Lane Route Extends

Surveyors stake a new four lane highway route east of the Rouge River passing Whitby and Oshawa, requiring removal of a brick schoolhouse in School Section No 4 outside Oshawa. The government will pay $4 000 damages to assist the operations.

Farewell Surprise for Mrs Souch Before Toronto Move

On Monday evening August 8 a farewell party at Mrs. F. Souch's home marked her departure to Toronto. About forty ladies attended and presented a Hymnary and a bridge lamp. Miss Lallian Allin spoke after singing She's a Jolly Good Person. Mrs. Louch expressed gratitude for the kindness before ice cream served.

Brown Beauty Speckled Trout Captured Near Town

Mr J J Gilfillan received a fine 14 inch brown speckled trout weighing 1 lb 2 oz from Orme Gamsby on Saturday morning at seven. The fish, caught at the flume about half a mile from town, was fought from a long line and hauled up the water fall to shore. Locals flocked to view the catch after the tale of the battle spread.

Ancient Greece lecture shown by Professor Sisson

An Orono Horticultural Society program titled Ancient and Modern Greece impressed a large audience at Mrs. M. H. Staples home. The talk covered Delphi and Apollo areas, Sparta’s rugged people, Marathon birthplace of ancient games, Greek agriculture, threshing floors, terraced fields, and mule hauling timber. A lunch of sandwiches cake and coffee followed on the lawn.

Burns elected president of Canadian Weekly News Association

F J Burns publisher of the Adver tiser Kentville Nova Scotia was chosen president at the Winnipeg convention. Retiring president George W James Bowmanville and Ontario officers H T Halliwell H T Rice G V Charters plus directors from Ontario were named. Bruce A McKelvieie warned of totalitarian threats to freedom and democracy in Canada and urged press leadership.
