National pension plan favored for Canada across provinces

Writers argue for a single portable contributory pension controlled by the federal government to serve all Canadians. They note provincial schemes risk inconsistency and that federal actuaries estimate costs at about 4 percent of payroll, shared by employer and employee. The federal government plans to meet with the ten provinces to decide administration.

Expect Excellent Tobacco Crop In Twin Counties

In the twin counties the tobacco crop is seen as the best in a decade with favourable weather to late September. P G Newell, elected director of the Ontario Flue-Cured Tobacco Growers Marketing Board, projects a 1 000 000 dollar crop and notes potential relief from a 30 million pound surplus. He backs boosting exports and hiring a 50 000 dollar annual sales executive to grow foreign markets. Over production risks include freelance growers before the Ontario Supreme Court or licensed farmers not trimming acreage, yet the surplus currently costs the board 80 000 a month in storage and interest.
