Clarke High School released grade thirteen results showing about 80 percent passing. At least ten students earned honours graduation with 1st class marks 75 and over, 2nd class 66 to 74, 3rd class 60 to 65, and credits 50 to 59.
List of prize recipients in the Field Crop Competition sponsored by the Durham Central Agricultural Society. Oats prizes awarded to Garnet Richard and Son, Bowmanville first. Ernest L. Gilbank Orono second. Horace Best Orono third. George Carson Orono fourth. A. L. Blanchard Hampton sixth. R. Chater Liskard eighth. R. D. Morton Kendal ninth. H. Bruce Tink Hampton. Additional names cover numerous students and subjects including Eng C, Hist C, Geom, Trig, Bot. Others include Lyn Brown Music first and various entries from Newcastle, Orono, and Hampton.
Paul Cooke of Toronto driving a Comstock Ford Falcon Sprint led 21 rivals to win Canada’s first sedan endurance race at Mosport Park. The 221 mile event finished in 2 hours 59 minutes 18.8 seconds at 74 mph. Al Pease of Toronto was second in an Austin Cooper, 13.4 seconds back, with Werner Gudaus of Toronto third in a Volvo.
The Orono Midgets lose 5 4 in Frankfurt in the second game of a three game series. Paul Jones pitched seven innings, Gord Allin and Jones scored Orono’s two runs in the tenth, but Frankfurt rallied with a bases loaded triple in the bottom of the tenth to win. Barry Lane walked four to fuel the late rally as Cameron Perrault had two hits.
Mary Lynn Bailey and Cathy Wilson pass Clarke High School grade 13 and plan to enroll at Peterborough Teachers College this September. Bailey earns one first class paper six second class papers and two third class papers. Wilson gains one first class two seconds three thirds and two credits.
The Orono Chamber of Commerce Street Fair drew about 750 attendees despite cold weather. Sandra Johnson of Orono won the fifty fifty prize worth around 150 dollars as the event grossed over 2000 dollars with chamber expectations to clear 1100 to 1200 dollars.
The Orono Times announces no edition on August 20th due to holidays from August 13th to 24th. The office will be closed and no paper published on Thursday August 20th.
In Port Hope on Monday Magistrate R B Baxter lambasted the Ontario Provincial Police for a flawed charge system. He shredded a sworn charge to show his contempt, citing summons confusion where mailed and personal summons duplicate actions. He blamed the system, not local officers, for the mess created by higher authorities.
The Orono junior team closed their season with a five inning 17 to 6 win against Newtonville. Pitcher Nancy Forrester struck out nine while catcher Nancy Nixon slapped five hits and Carol Mercer added four. The squad advances to league playdowns beginning tonight.
Two district men were injured in a midnight collision on County Road 73 north of Newcastle. Thomas Lewis 53 of Crono and Gordon MacDonald 39 of Newcastle RR 2 were taken to Bowmanville Memorial Hospital. Bowmanville OPP investigated. both cars sustained heavy damage.
The Orono Horticultural Society and Orono Junior Gardeners host the annual Flower Show on Thursday August 27 in the Orono United Church main Auditorium. Open to the public with 25 cent admission from 6:30 pm. cakes and tea served 7:00 to 9:00 pm. prizes awarded at 3:30 pm. About thirty classes showcase flowers and arrangements from village and area.
The Orono Library will stay open this Friday and the following Friday with Mrs Reid in charge while librarian Mrs B Mercer is on holidays.
The Orono Fair announces its prize list as the largest yet from the Durham Central Agricultural Society, spanning about 120 pages. Exhibits cover horses cattle poultry 4-H and crafts with events on Friday and Saturday including a School parade rodeo show 4-H contests horse shows harness racing and an Amateur show finale.
The firm of Marshall Macklin Monaghan is finalizing the Oreno Water system plans. A field crew is taking measurements in the village for completion. Plans should be completed and approved ready for tenders by mid September, enabling construction to start in October.
