Orono Pee Wees Clinch Series to Enter OBA Playdowns
Orono Baseball Club defeated Cobourg Training School 15 9 on Cobourg ground securing a two game series sweep and the right to advance to the Ontario playdowns next week. Terry Carleton earned the win with 14 strikeouts as Gary Mackin Wayne Kennedy and Carleton led Orono hitters. Cobourg’s Gibson struck out seven but the Orono bats produced seven runs in the fifth and a final two runs in the seventh to seal the game. The win marks a third straight Ontario playdown appearance for Crono with past runs reaching the finals and semi finals before.

The Orono PeelWees beat Cobourg Training School PeeWees 11 to 10 after an eighteen day layoff. Gary MecMacKin scored the winning run on a sacrifice as Craig Hinds delivered the earlier RBI hit. Crono pitched with 6 strikeouts, Cobourg tied in the ninth before Orono pulled away in the seventh. Barry Hobbs and Charlie Reid produced key hits and plays for Orono. The second game of the series was played Tuesday in Cobourg.

Clarke Township Council Sets Meeting With School Inspector
Clarke Township Council met August 1 in the Council Chamber Orono with Reeve Jas T Brown, Deputy Reeve H E Walkey and councillors present. They hired solicitor E R Lovekin for the August 6 Ontario Municipal Board hearing on 401 Highway road closings and discussed inviting Public Schools Inspector C A Holmes for September to plan an independent survey of Clarke’s educational needs. The police trustees asked a hawkers and pedlars by law for Orono, and drainage culvert plans for F Q Cooper’s project were referred to the Road Superintendent.

Genesee, Dawhbul, Cornell 595 and Richmond offer high yields and milling quality for Ontario farmers this fall. Genesee tops western Ontario yields but has weaker straw than Cornell 595, which shatters more easily. Jean Velma Patterson died at her home near Orono on June 27 1957 after a lingering illness. She was the wife of Everett Stapleton and mother of Howard born December 16 1926, daughter of Mrs Neta Patterson and the late Robin Patterson. Survived by husband Everett son Howard her mother sister and brother. Funeral service conducted by Rev D R Dewdney of Newcastle with pallbearers John Stapleton Charles Stapleton Winter Stapleton Kenneth Ball Raymond Chapman and Almond Bullock. Interment at Orono Cemetery June 29 1957.

Hockey Combines To Operate Bowmanville Team Again
Bowmanville Growd Combines will operate as a combined Intermediate A hockey club this season. They hope to again affiliate with Whitby Dunlops after a successful last season. Manager Frank Jamieson said several out of town prospects are being contacted and more Bowmanville players may try out. The Combines, once doubted to last the season, won the Lakeshore League title and reached the Ontario semifinals in 1956 57.

Plane Lands In Tree Near Elizabethville
A Piper Cub flown by Mike Sikma of Hamilton stalled and nosedived into a treetop 30 feet up while crop dusting on Cory van Beloin’s tobacco farm near Elizabethville. Sikma, with 300 flying hours, was treated at Port Hope Hospital and released next day. The plane, after four successful passes, was damaged beyond repair and out of service for the season.

Fire Destroys Three Barns Amid Saturday Storm
A Saturday storm leveled three barns on Ralph McMackin’s Clarke township property. Heat from the blaze threatened nearby structures but the house remained safe as straw bales stored inside the barns burned. Cause unknown. some dismembered remains associated with a prior dig at Rice Lake Serpent Mounds were noted nearby.

Pheasants Released Across Durham County in 1957 program
A total of 6950 pheasants from Codrington Ont released in Clarke and Darlington townships and elsewhere in Durham County. Birds include 6000 chicks 500 poults and 450 adults from May 20 to July 22 in several forest districts. An additional 800 adults allocated to bird dog associations for training. Researchers assess hatchery birds’ value to pheasant hunting while leg bands are issued for hunter cooperation.
