Victory Loan Concert At Orono Shows War Pictures

The Victory Concert in Town Hall Orono attracted many youths with a quiz contest across three classes. Winners advance to Newtonville and Peterboro. two war films loaned by the Dominion Government and a moving account of Russian fighting and a conscribed airman were shown. Community praise went to the Dominion Government British American Oil Co. for film support and to local organizers. Around 14 dollars covered expenses.

Wartime controls farmer slaughtering under beef ring plan

Restrictions on slaughtering for sale take effect April 19 under Wartime Prices and Trade Board rules. Interim permits end, permanent permits issued to established farmer-slaughterers. farm use and limited “Beef Rings” allowed for farmers. Casual slaughters discouraged. about 5 000 farmer-slaughterers expected to remain.

Victory at Bismarck Sea Tally and Bond Drive Appeal

The Bismarck Sea victory destroyed 22 Japanese ships and 102 planes at Allied cost of about 5,093,710 dollars. Purchases of Victory Bonds are urged to fund future victories and sustain wartime effort.

Newtonville War Memorial Demolished In Crash

A heavy tractor trailer crashed into the Newtonville war memorial on Sunday, destroying the twelve by sixteen foot cairn and scattering debris across the highway. Wesley Elliott of Kendal was injured, Roy Munro of Toronto driving the tractor was treated and released, damage to the truck three thousand dollars, memorial erected in 1904 for Captain Milligan and Boer War servicemen later commemorated.

Canadian Engineers Honored in England for Gibraltar Work

Cpl. G L Carscadden among 297 Royal Canadian Engineers who received sterling silver watch fobs bearing the key of Gibraltar in a ceremony in southern England. Lt Gen A G L McNaughton praised the sappers for their two year tunnelling task at Gibraltar. The fobs, donated by Hon. C D Howe, carry the Rock motif and the recipient names on the reverse.

Ontario Liberal Leader Race At Toronto Convention

The Ontario Liberal Convention in Toronto on April 28 29 will select a new leader from five candidates including Conant Nixon Roebuck McQuesten and Walter Thompson. The election timing may hinge on any summer vote and on war conditions influencing legislature extensions.

Hoarding case fines North Battleford farmer Emil Brassard

Emil Brassard of North Battleford Sask was fined 1500 for hoarding. Investigators found 1675 pounds sugar 44 pounds tea 23 pounds coffee 3000 pounds flour 144 cakes toilet soap 100 pounds washing soap 1.5 cases washing powder 1 case cocoa seven 8 pound tins honey. The stock would seed a small grocery.

Easter Services at Park St Church Draw Large Crowd

Park St United Church held well attended Easter services on April 25 with both morning and evening crowds. The choir performed two Resurrection themed anthems and the pastor preached on The Resurrection and The Universal Gospel. The evening message asked where our loved ones are after death and urged seeking things above with Christ.

Tag Day For The Blind Sets May 8th Effort

A Tag Day on Saturday May 8 is arranged to aid the Canadian Institute for the Blind. Last year the community sponsored a tag day and the Society’s constructive work is well known. The blind learn occupations to maintain self-respect and usefulness as society faces greater war demands.

A two day 1888 production in the drill shed at Orono featured 100 performers from Orono and district led by Prof. D. P. Wyatt. The Canadian war loan campaign began strong with more than 63 million dollars on day one. Officials project 1.134 billion by eighteen days, surpassing the objective by 34 million. Canadians from individuals to major firms are urged to buy bonds to equip troops and aid allied forces. By day two total reaches 118,195,750 dollars.
