Orono Park Board Receives Two Outside Donations

The Orono Community Park Board thanks two donors, Mr. A W Maguire of Calgary Alberta and Mr. Leroy Hamilton of Toronto, for gifts to improve Memorial Park. The Orono Times publishes their letters describing the contributions and well wishes to keep Orono connected.

Ontario Red Cross Campaign Reaches Three Quarters Goal

Ian R. Dowie announced on April 8 at Ontario Division headquarters that about three quarters of the two million dollar provincial objective is raised. He noted many branches have not yet reported and praised improving returns while citing bad weather as a factor slowing canvassing. Dowie, campaign chair, remains confident the full target will be reached.

Col Lambert to Speak at Park Street Church Service

The Woman's Association of Park Street Church invites the public to a Sunday service on April 27 with Rev. Col. Sidney Lambert, Padre of Christie Street Hospital in Toronto, as guest speaker. Special music will be provided by the church choir and the event aims to fill the church.

Maguire writes of moving from Toronto to Orono area

A letter dated April 20 1947 from A W Maguire explains leaving their Toronto apartment for a country property at the corner of the Tth line and Leskard road on the 29th of the month. He plans to remain in the city office and asks for issues to be sent to Orono thereafter.

Bird House Contest At Orono With Prizes

Children busy with hammers and saws for a bird house competition in Orono Town Hall next Tuesday night April 29 conducted by the Orono Fish and Hunt Club. The event aims to boost local interest in bird life with community singing three moving pictures and cash prizes for the best bird house built by a boy or girl.

Cream Producers Urged To Vote On Cream Scheme

Ontario cream producers in butter manufacture are invited to vote on a Proposed Marketing Scheme during April. Each farm over 21 should send a voter to their Township meeting where discussion and ballots will occur. Voting happens only at meetings. notices with dates appear in the issue. Hespeler Old Boys' Reunion Billeting Planned for June July

Preparations in Hespeler for the Old Boys' Reunion set billeting to 4000 guests nightly or 24000 for the week June 30 to July 6. Fred Hutchings says ample sleeping space is arranged with 2600 families already registered and hotels booked. The town of 3460 residents expects about 100000 dormer visitors from Ontario, Canada and the U.S. Local schools and public buildings will provide beds and tents.

April Goodwill Evening Auxiliary Meeting Review

The April Goodwill Evening Auxiliary gathered at Mrs. Wm. Armstrong’s home for a special Haster meeting with Bowmanville members in attendance. Miss Cry german spoke on Christian Stewardship. Mrs. Chambers sang. Mrs. Work man provided music as the group enjoyed lunch and social time. The next key gathering is to be hosted by Mrs. Drummond.

Durham Agricultural Society Organizes For Fall Fair

The Durham Central Agricultural Society met at the Armouries in Orono on April 22 to review the prize list and form new committees for fair operations. They planned two old crop competitions for white oats and potatoes to boost entries and prize money, with broader outreach to Bowmanville Newcastle Orono Darlington Manvers.

Subsidy Removed From Butterfat May 1

The government will drop the 8 1 4 cent butterfat subsidy on May 1 boosting butter price. Expected rise from 45 to 55 or 60 cents per pound and possible lifting of butter rationing in May. Stocks exceed last year by 16 million pounds and Prices Board to recoup wholesalers' and retailers' inventory profits.
