Red Cross Drive Nears Thousand Dollar Total

Clarke township report shows the Red Cross drive raising $996.40 in March with contributions from multiple school sections and local organizations including Orono, Kendal, No. 9 and No. 21, plus W.A. groups, clubs, lodges, and churches, thanking canvassers for their support.

WCTU Meeting Highlights Faith Devotion and Plans

The Women's Christian Temperance Union met April 21 in the Sunday school auditorium with good attendance. Mrs. Walsh opened with hymn and devotional led by Miss Sherwin on faith, followed by a prize clip sheet on jury service for Ontario women. Plan for the April 30 convention at Orono United Church and an early autumn Gold Medal Contest were announced.

Orono Women’s Institute Holds Annual Pot Luck Meeting

The Orono Women’s Institute met Friday afternoon April 10 for a pot luck luncheon with about 35 members present. President Mrs. Foster Ferguson led the session. reports from committees highlighted successful programs. Miss Aileen Aked’s Motoring through England was voted the most interesting. Officers elected: President Mrs. Fred Bowen, 1st Vice President Mrs. H. E. Millson, 2nd Vice President Mrs. R. E. Logan, Secretary Mrs. A. Gerry, Treasurer Mrs. W. Sherwin, District Director Mrs. F. Ferguson. The gathering ended with God Save The Queen.

Orono Amateur Athletic Association Plans Summer Supervision

Directors report a $320 surplus from rink operations and outline summer supervision for the Park. A supervisor and assistants will run daily activities including swimming, ball, tennis, croquet and other games. A committee led by Fuester Rutherford and Forrester will report back March 4 with a full program.

One Armed Driver Killed Near Pontypool

Howard Hines, a one armed Lindsay resident and World War II veteran, died when his car skidded off Highway 35 near Pontypool last Thursday. Passengers Arthur Mackin and Jim Maguire escaped with cuts and bruises. Hines leaves a wife a daughter and two sons.

Blitz Campaign For Church Building Fund Planned

The United Church announces a blitz canvass on Wednesday April 29 1953 to clear remaining church indebtedness. Canvassers may call Monday Tuesday or the main day. contributions may be left with treasurer O W Rolph or at the church. An evening program and refreshments will follow with results posted as received.
