Campaign to Add 220 Beds at Oshawa General Hospital

A campaign to raise 2 700 000 for a 220 bed addition to Oshawa General Hospital runs May 2 to May 14 led by E H Walker of General Motors of Canada. The project addresses critical overcrowding with daily occupancy 22 percent above safety limits and will expand capacity north of the existing wing.

Orono Begins Test Drilling For Village Water Supply

International Water Supply Company started test drilling in Orono to locate a municipal water source. A well must pump 150 gallons per minute. tests will assess capacity and water purity, aiming for minimal iron content.

Clean-Up Campaign Planned by Orono Police Trustees

Orono residents are urged to rake boulevards and pile debris for pickup as police trustees tour the village with a truck this Saturday. Local businesses are asked to sweep streets and pile sand and gravel at curbs to aid a province showplace cleanup effort.

Kenneth and Mrs Ken Neal celebrated their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary on April 14 at Oddfellows Hall. One hundred ten guests attended. gifts included a twelve piece silverware set, Kroeler rocking chair, table lamp, and a plate glass mirror.

Red Cross Canvass Falls Short of Objective

The village and township Red Cross drive aims for 1000 but has only 450 collected so far. Road conditions hindered township returns, with Kendai the only town contributing. A portion of Orono is yet to report. The group plans swimming classes and vitamin tablets for schoolchildren. A 200 fund for a local resuscitator is under review with a demonstration tonight.

Former Kendal Boy Dies in Toronto Burial

David Elliott an old Kendal boy buried at Lang Memorial Chapel on April 16 1960 after dying April 13 in St. Margarets Hospital Toronto He had lived in St Petersburg USA prior to returning to Toronto and was son of the late Wm Eliott early district settlers He was brother to Wesley Elliott Mrs Fred Brimacombe and James Elliott of Brandon Manitoba.

Accident Claims Life On 115

A 24 year old Camp Petawawa soldier Thomas W Gallagher died from injuries after a car he rode in overturned on Highway 115 near Brentwood Motel north of Orono on Good Friday morning. The driver Thomas Urbanowsky 24 and another passenger George Martin 23 suffered minor injuries. Guy Thisdelle 19 was uninjured. All are from the First Fort Gary Horse Regiment.

Torch Bearers at Orono Town Hall Two Night Stand

The Orono Players will present their new play The Torch Bearers in a two night stand at Orono Town Hall within five weeks. The annual event features a three act comedy with Mrs E H Samuel directing the cast in full rehearsals expected to draw hundreds of local viewers.

Harness Racing Slated At Orono Track This Spring and Summer

Orono track will host two harness racing events this year. The Orono Turf Club plans a May 14 meet featuring local and visiting horses. In June the Orono Chamber of Commerce will stage its annual Colt Derby with preparations underway.

Car Stolen From Orono Street Worth Four Wheels

A car owned by Mr Arnold Wallace was stolen Monday night from Orono Main Street around midnight. It was found on Mill Street in Newcastle next morning undamaged before thieves repurposed it and caused damage by running it into a culvert. Police investigate theft and damage.
