Heather Lodge No 384 formed in Orono with 88 degree candidates

A new Rebekah Lodge Heather Lodge No 384 was instituted in Orono with 88 candidates, led by Elizabeth Fletcher and Violet Pearce. Officers elected include Vittle Wilson and Meg Allin, with guests from Whitby to Guelph attending. The event featured installations, gifts, speeches, and a lunch, recalling Orono Lodge 486's 35 year history.

Easter Service and Mission Study at Park St Church

The April Wo man s Missionary Society meeting in Park St Church was led by President Mrs Delve. An Easter Service of Worship from leaflets, readings including In the Garden, and a vocal trio highlighted the theme The Power of the Living Christ. Mrs Littlewood, Miss J Mrey, and others contributed with messages on humility and living a Christian life.

Orono honors Mr and Mrs Lunn with marriage party

A pleasant evening in Orono Town Hall on March 28 celebrated Mr. and Mrs. Lunn of Orono and their New Year’s Day 1947 marriage. The Orono orchestra debuted, guests praised the couple, and a walnut coffee and serving table were given.

Orono Adopts Daylight Saving Time Starting April 26

Orono officials meet to approve daylight saving for the summer from April 26 at midnight through September 27 1947. The secretary to reply to the Department of Highways about a dangerous tree and hydro work will follow when the department is ready to fell the tree. Bills approved total 5.25 for Goodyear hose washers and a fire engine license. Sidewalk talks held over until April meeting.

Newcastle Plans Memorial Rink For Community Hockey

Newcastle residents vote to build a memorial rink after an open air facility proved uncomfortable. A committee including Reeve Pielton, Geo Crowthers, Dr J A Butler and others will report on cost and construction before a follow up meeting.

Outstanding Program Brings Social Evenings To A Close

Mr. Raymond Chapman and fellow workers earned praise for a splendid entertainment last Friday as the final W A Park St social of the season. A large audience enjoyed brass quartets vocalists a radio broadcast and lunch as Rural church life faced distractions.

Park Street Bible Class Meeting Notes

Park Street United Church Bible Class held a Thursday evening gathering in the Sunday School room on March 27. Convenor Mrs Eagleson and Chairman Rev. S. Littlewood opened with scripture read by Mrs. Walsh and a prayer. Mrs. Littlewood accompanied hymns at the piano. Mrs. Delve and Mrs. H. Rowe contributed.

The fourth meeting of the Home craft Guild at Orono Canada included singing led by Mrs Rolph and Mrs Boultbee. Interior decorating topics featured Ralphs talk on living room importance and matching drapes with wallpaper. Mrs Linton spoke on spring fashions with Joyce Tennant modeling outfits. A small gift was given to Mrs Boultbee for her work. the meeting closed with God Save the King and a note about the May gathering.

Senate Vote Fails on Oleo Sale Ban Amid Dairy Pressure

The bill to allow oleo imports and end the ban was rejected 58 to 22 in the Senate after lobbying by dairy interests. Liberals and Conservatives split, supporting lifting the ban with farmers backing changes, while others opposed. The debate closed with calls to refer the measure to a committee.

A Garton Dies From Bus Crash Injuries

Timothy A. Garton of Bowmanville proprietor of Garton Coach Lines died after a bus crash on Queen Elizabeth Way. The Lindsay midget hockey team was en route to Port Colborne when the vehicle struck an abutment. Nine others injured, Garton suffered fatal head injuries and never regained consciousness. He served on Bowmanville Town Council and held lodge and church memberships. Funeral was held at Morris Funeral Home Bowmanville.
