Seven Oshawa youths face 42 charges in Cobourg court
Seventeen charges were laid last Thursday on seven Oshawa youths for break and enter and theft across Ontario. All are in their twenties. Cameron Murray received suspended sentence. others remanded. Sentences handed later included three years penitentiary for William Zabidoyle and two years less a day for Steve Ryzhak, with other penalties varying. The pursuit ended on Morton farm near Orono after a ditch collision. Provincial Constable David Adair led the investigation with local inspectors.

Durham County Club hosts maritime slides and Nova Scotia tales
About a hundred members of the Durham County Club at Sherbourne House listened as Dr. L. B. Williams narrated a colorful talk. He showed slides from Nova Scotia featuring MacAskill the giant, a Cabot Trail scene, and the famed Old Smoky mountain, plus a joke about capturing fog with a camera.

Millbrook Farmer and Daughter Escape Train Crash
Wilfred Reynolds and his seven year old daughter Betty survived a collision when their car was struck by a speeding CPR mixed passenger and freight train near their Millbrook home on March 18. They escaped with only bruises and slight shock and were taken to their home after being removed from the wreck.

Canada mobilizes manpower and expands selective service plan
In Parliament on March 24 Prime Minister Mackenzie King outlined a National Selective Service scheme to boost war effort. It broadens women’s role in industry, raises compulsory training age to 30, and extends calls to non British citizens while stabilizing agricultural work and exempting farmers. It also covers clothing orders and price controls on meat products and expands import subsidies to several goods including earthenware leather and luggage.

Durham County Farmers Sweep Prizes at Quinte Seed Fair
Forty boys from Hastings Prince Edward Ontario Lennox and Addington and Durham competed in Kingston for the Junior Farmers Seed Judging. Durham won the Warden's Trophy for the twelfth straight year with a team of Boyd Ayre Thomas Belch and Norman Hubbard. Individual class winners included Elmer Hoge Garnet Whitfield Lloyd Jackson and Bruce Cunningham with prizes of cash and two bushels of registered seed.

On March 18 a car carrying 28 Holstein cows and 10 young calves left Durham County for C S Erb and Co of Middleton Pennsylvania. Purchases were arranged through fieldman A J Tamblyn from breeders including Wood Ida Mian Peterborough Jose Newcastle Blanchard Souther Pascoe Hampton Runals Kellogg Reynolds Welcome McConnell Canton and others. Shipment valued at 5275 dollars.

Edward Pinder Dies in Toronto At 95
Edward Pinder 95 died at his Toronto home 153 Essex Street on Friday March 27. Born in England he moved to Canada at 19, settled in Port Hope, then Orono where he ran a carriage factory for 40 years and credited with Canada’s first iron barrows. Survived by daughter Mrs Victor Bradburn of Port Hope and sons Harry James and William Edward of Toronto. Funeral at A W Miles Chapel 30 St Clair Ave West, then to Orono Cemetery.
