Big County Fair 9 Draws Near

The Big County Fair approaches its ninth edition with plans for record attractions and events. Organizers promote a larger midway, enhanced competitions, and new exhibits to draw regional visitors and boost local tourism.

Clackamas County Fair Opens with Music and Parade of Days

The 1918 Clackamas County Fair begins September 24 with gates opening at dawn. Hubbard and Redland bands perform while Judge G B Dimick gives the welcome, followed by M J Lee of Canby and other fair officials. Oregon City Day and German Day highlight Thursday and Friday with Elks, goats barbecue, juvenile exhibits, horse races, and extensive livestock displays including Lazelle Jersey and Guernsey cattle. Special bands from Mt Angel, Aurora, Hubbard, Molalla, Redland, Estacada, and Marquam perform. The fair grounds feature a large pavilion, varied exhibits, numerous concessions, and reduced rail rates to encourage attendance.

Tragedy at Oswego: One Killed in Picnic Deck Collapse

A picnic party at Goodwin station Oswego was struck when a freight car load of slab wood broke loose from a high speed run and toppled onto bystanders. Mrs. John Kelley, 36, was killed instantly. several others were injured. Coroner Wilson conducted the inquest Tuesday.

Bank Robber Foiled by Hidden Saws at Milwaukie Jail

Six steel saws were slipped through a jail door to Vergin Perrine, a Milwaukie bank robber, Saturday last. One saw caught in the door, leaving a danger of a jail delivery. A quarter inch hole allowed passage. one saw stuck and was found by Sheriff Masa. Mass recovered the saws hidden beneath the jail floor after a search of the prisoner and the jail.
