Desperado Smith Kills Sheriff Shaver in Woodburn Tragedy

Sheriff John R. Shaver died after being mortally wounded by outlaw Frank Smith who also killed Night Officer Henderson in Woodburn. The shooting sparked a countywide manhunt, with Salem authorities declaring a reward and a train of posse members pursuing the fugitive. Shaver, a longtime Clackamas county official and stockman, is mourned by Oregon City and county residents as the community closes offices and honors him at a river funeral.

Mel Rhoades Charged With Horse Stealing in West Oregon City

Deputy coroner Thomas Miller arrested Mel Rhoades Tuesday on a horse stealing charge after a complaint by R Golaja of Portland. Rhoades allegedly bought two horses on installments but kept them without paying. he fled to camp at Damascus before being tracked down in West Oregon City.

Bloodhounds Track Outlaw Smith in Oregon Hunt

After a seven day chase, outlaw Smith was killed near New Era following a brush ambush. Bloodhounds and a posse closed in along the Southern Pacific tracks and Willamette river, with dynamite used in the brush before the final takedown near Canby. The deadly pursuit ended as Smith died en route to New Era.
