Communion cups replace common chalice system in Philadelphia churches
The Philadelphia Record reports that individual communion cups were used yesterday at the Fourth Baptist Church and Eighteenth Street Methodist Episcopal Church. Seven trays with 450 glasses served about 490 communicants in seven minutes, with deacons passing trays through pews. The system improves cleanliness and allows simultaneous drinking, with plans to add another tray next communion. Some members still prefer the old method, but preference is now minority.
