Former United States Senator Edward W. Carmack of Tennessee was shot and killed in a street duel in Nashville on Monday morning. The assailant was Robert Cooper, a young attorney, who shot Carmack after a pistol exchange. Cooper’s father, Col. Duncan B Cooper, attempted to intervene and was present. Police detained both men as the city reeled from the tragedy linked to political feuds and Carmack’s editorials against DeJean Cooper and the Democratic machine.
