United States cotton planting for 1911 stands at about 104.7 percent of the previous year’s area, roughly 35,004,000 acres. The May 25 condition is 87.8 percent of normal, with Georgia outlook bright at 89.3, South Carolina lagging, and late planting due to dry weather.
The Chicago Tribune published a poll of 10 000 newspapers across 22 states on approving Taft's reciprocity agreement with Canada. Of 4 303 replies, 4 240 were definite opinions, with 2 113 in favor and 1 127 against, a nearly three to one support for the policy, suggesting broad approval of tariff removal between the U S and Canada.

Washington reports a sweeping Supreme Court ruling that the American Tobacco Company and allied firms violated the Sherman anti trust law by restraining interstate commerce and attempting to monopolize the tobacco industry. The court ordered dissolution or realignment within eight months under court supervision, with Justice Harlan dissenting on the broader interpretation. The ruling branding the entire tobacco combine as unlawful included Imperial and British concerns as co operators.
Washington officials studied the Tobacco and Standard Oil rulings and agreed the rule of reason is an established Supreme Court interpretation. A House resolution asks the attorney general about criminal action against the American Tobacco Co. and its officers. Administration friends believe the decision means no new Sherman act amendments will be pressed.
Washington reports a 25 percent wage increase demand by a twenty member committee of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers for Southern railroad engine drivers. Washington reports Attorney General Wickersham told the House committee that Supreme Court rulings in Standard Oil and American Tobacco will spur prosecutions under the anti trust law. He said juries and courts resisted prison sentences but now show more willingness to convict. He outlined plans to prosecute meat packers milk dealers grocers naval stores and window glass violators and noted the cotton pool actions target seven men controlling raw cotton.
A severe storm moving from Ontario along the St Lawrence Valley struck the eastern U S with showers and thunder, wrecking buildings and uprooting trees. In Cleveland four died and many were injured as boats capsized on Lake Erie. Lorain reported three deaths as winds topples poles and shatters windows.
Gov. Woodrow Wilson, returning to Trenton from a West South tour, endorses the Democratic tariff caucus vote to cut wool duties to 20 percent ad valorem. He asserts no principle abandonment, favors gradual reform, supports free wool materials, and cites progressives both parties with reciprocity gains as key to 1912 prospects.
An unknown negro fired on a Southern railroad train near Tayloe in Demopolis causing brakeman Alan Clifford Foxhall to be killed after being shot twice. Two white passengers sustained hand wounds as the train ran at a medium speed.
Miss Katherine Ryan of Worcester was instantly killed and her sister Miss Margaret Ryan fatally injured when a large touring car they rode in, returning from an outing, crashed into a telephone pole. Four other occupants were injured.
