The tone reflects a 19th century confidence scheme selling household goods through a trusted local firm, H. W. & J. G. Webb.
P Cc. Coll Bank of Orange invites all residents to open accounts with deposits from $1 and four percent interest on time deposits. An American in Paris was duped by two men posing as pocketbook agents who offered a secret-opening purse for one thousand five hundred dollars. After the victim cut open the purse, finding nothing, police intervened and arrested the duo. One thief boasted of wealth and a London establishment, a claim police later verified.
