J Knapp Horner was found guilty of murder in the second degree for the killing of Deputy Sheriff Nichols in Augusta between 6 and 6 thirty Friday after a lengthy trial. The jury sentenced him to 12 years in the State penitentiary. Horner, a 41 year old Confederate veteran, sought a new trial as counsel anticipated an appeal. He was returned to Durham jail after sentencing.
