Early Anthracite Use in Philadelphia A Historical Note

The blocky coal known as anthracite was once dismissed as useless for fuel except by blacksmiths. In 1803 two boatloads reached Philadelphia but sold poorly. Authorities tried steam engine tests, leads to distribution as gravel, stoppages at Mauch Chunk, and renewed mining in 1813. Stoves and fires were showcased to entice adoption and even bribery occurred to spread use.
