Rachel Kim and a Villa Park High athlete are Orange City News picks for top athletes of 2013-14. Orange and Villa Park showcase nine months of athletic talent, with local letter winners across sports proving the area among Orange County’s best. Two athletes earned Boy and Girl Athlete of the Year trophies in the paper’s second year of the awards.
Sports writers Brian Whitehead Kenny Connolly and Matt Hanlon selected varsity high school athletes from the paper circulation area. Selected athletes will receive plaques from the newspaper.
Five candidates compete for two Orange City Council seats while the mayoral race features incumbent Tita Smith against Eugene Fields. In Villa Park Diana Fascenelli seeks re election and a slate including Sanjay Khetani Stephen Miller Karl Kreutziger Robert Collacott and Bill Nelson vies for three seats. Fields, a former Orange Register reporter, aims to keep taxes stable and help speed economic recovery.
A historical note explains that Killefer, opened in 1931, was named for Lydia Killefer an Orange school teacher and later principal highlighting the district’s naming practice and local education history.
The Old Towne Preservation Association seeks National Register listing for the 1931 Killefer School at 541 N Lemon St to block the Olson Co plan for 30 town homes on the 1.7 acre site. The group notes the building’s role in early desegregation and has hired Historic Resources Group to pursue nomination.
