Examinations for November report cards are noted as GPS pupils prepare. The school raised 927.65 via Upper Canada Book and Tract Society drive and 162 in four weeks of War Savings. Field Day featured 34 events with champions in junior, intermediate, and senior divisions across running, jumping, and bicycle races.
After a 30 year hiatus, Rev. S. M. Roadhouse of Stratford will preach at anniversary services in the United Church in Georgetown next Sunday.
Stewart town reports Roy Smith has received his release from the RCAF and is home. Mrs. Mortram of Toronto visits with her daughter Mrs. W Humphreys. Mr. P. R. Batly of Hamilton visited last weekend. W A meeting held at Cecil Smiths. Clothing for Europe to be gathered at Council Chamber. Miss Joan Hodge of Acton spent weekend with Mr and Mrs W Hodge.
The Canadian Girls in Training gathered at United Church 8 30 on Tuesday October 23 7 30 pm. Mrs Jeffery led worship and two new members joined bringing total to 17. Plans for a Halloween party were made and candy beakers prepared for use at the event.
In the girls relay Patey Pallister Joyce McMillan Jean Coleman and Mary McNally placed second with Belle Tennant Margaret Golden Dolores Herrington and Jean Tyler taking third Joan Tuck, Shirley Caseley, Sarah Wylie and Ruth McNally placed fourth Moira Kelly Mable Shepherd Joyce Herrington and Joan Chaplin also competed. In the boys relay Donald Brydon Junior Grace Earl Walters Henry Chaplin finished first with Ivan Huffman Don Herrington and Frank Anderson second and Hugo Tapp Ronald Denham Keith Scott and Dean Thompson third.
Second member of the McDonald family to return from overseas Pte Clifford McDonald arrived aboard the Ile de France. He is son of Angus McDonald of Dolly Varden and brother of Pte Norman McDonald who left Canada months ago after release from a German prison camp. Clifford, with the Lome Scots, went overseas in June 1941 and served three years in England and India before returning to Georgetown. LAC Reg Broomhead also returned aboard the Trede France. He is son of Mrs Loy Broomhead and the late Fred Broomhead, formerly employed by the Georgetown Herald, reenlisted in the RCAF in February 1942, trained as an aircraft mechanic, served in Trenton and Brantford, went to England in December 1942, was sent to India in September last year, and married Elizabeth Daley of Middlesbrough a few weeks before.
Sgt William Hewitt came home after two and a half years abroad with the South Saskatchewan General Hospital unit. He enlisted November 11, 1940, joined the RCAMC, served at Camp Borden, and then overseas on the Ile de France. Welcomed by wife Violet Blair and sons Billy Danny and Teddy, he had been employed at Provincial Paper Like before enlistment.
Tpr. Joe Hall Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hall, returns to Georgetown after crossing from England aboard the Ue de France. Enlisted 1942 in the armoured corps, trained at Orillia and Camp Borden, served in North Africa, Italy, Belgium and Holland, now attached to the New Brunswick Hussars.
Rob Eason, a local man, served with the Larne Scots in June 1941 and saw action in North Africa and Italy. Wounded in Italy, he was sent to England and later transferred to the Armoured Corps after enlisting with Provincial Paper.
Tpr Bob Rayner returned from war aboard the De de Prance as one of four family members who served overseas. He joined the Lorne Scots at outbreak, moved to the 48th Highlanders in 1940, served in Sicily and Italy, was wounded, then transferred to the Princess Louise Dragoon Guards and sent home to England. He married Peggy Lusted in July 1943. Two brothers remain overseas in England and Holland, and his father served with the Lorne Scots from 1941 to 1942.
The Countess of Strathmore Chapter met at Mrs. A Beaumonts Glen Williams for its October gathering with twenty one attendees. They conducted business, held a social hour, reported $163 raised from a tag day for the Institute for the Blind, and approved donations to the Poppy Fund Overseas Cigarette Fund Polish Relief and more. Presentations were made to two newer members, cups and saucers were given, and refreshments were hosted by Mrs. A Beaumont with Mrs. S W Orr Mrs. Marion Barber and Mrs. N Vertec assisting.
former Stewarttown boy W O Gilbert Hunt left the RCAF last month and now works in Toronto. He enlisted in Lorne Scots at war outbreak, guarded Brampton, transferred to the air force in 1960, trained as aero engine mechanic in Brandon and St Thomas, stationed at Jarvis and Wrenton, remustered in 1943 as flight engineer, flew coastal command and anti-submarine duties in the North Atlantic. He crossed the Arctic Circle and visited Greenland Iceland Newfoundland and Labrador. He is the son of Cpl and Mrs S Hunt of Georgetown. his father, a two war veteran, is at an army camp in Brampton. W C Hunt married Iris Livermore of Mimico two years ago.
The home of Mr and Mrs Mark Clark welcomed Flying Officer Lealle Clark returning from overseas aboard the Ile de Prance. He came with his bride Beatrice Anderson of Walkerton who also returns to Canada for discharge. He trained as a wireless air gunner and served with the RAP Transport Command after Ferry Command. Prior to enlistment he worked at the Georgetown Herald. His brother Pilot Officer Bill Clark also served in ROAF.
Congratulations to Jum Dobbie for promotion to CSM serving in Holland with No 1 Transit Depot. Edgar Peeney of RCAP overseas is promoted to Warrant Officer 2. The Norrington family remains in memory with Eric discharged from RC AF and Walter in the Canadian Army in Holland awaiting return after Christmas.
Howard Laidlaw of Norval travels as one of ten farm delegates to the World Youth Conference in London England. The active district farmer is noted for his contribution and leadership in agricultural circles.
Mr John F Ford has had a slight stroke and remains in poor condition. Funeral held for Elmer Featherstone of Windsor Ontario at Bethel United Church on Monday October 22 with Rev Fred Ainsworth officiating. Featherstone brothers include Chester F and William plus Mrs Dr Edwardes Brampton. A car theft occurred in front of Orangemen Hall last week. Ashgrove United Church marks anniversary Sunday November 4 with Rev Pred Ainsworth as speaker. Bethel YP A reports 25 members on Bert Leslie side and 21 on Margaret Ford side after Oct 19 meeting chaired by Olive Lister. A crokinole party set for Oct 26. hymnals planned for Y P A and Sunday School. Christmas play planned. Missionary Night featured Anne Clifton, Evelyn Course scripture, Lois Merry solo, Rev Ainsworth spoke on Kagawa and newspaper evangelism. 32 attended. Sunday services covered ministerial reports of work in Java.
Mr and Mrs John Ransom of Brampton announce the engagement of their eldest daughter Margaret Mae to Robert Bruce Harley son of Mr and Mrs Dean Harley. The weddings take place in the early part of November.
The Knot Presbyterian Church celebrated its 35th anniversary with large attendance at morning and evening services. Rev. J. C Grier from Guelpoa led the day, with Mary Moyer as guest soloist and Marion Hepburn directing the choir. Miss Hepburn and Moyer performed a duet in the evening while Miles sang. Ken Harrison served as organist.

New solos by Mrs. F Thompson and Gladys Ruddell were featured with community singing led by Mr. John Bird. Anniversary services at Ashgrove Church are set for November 4 at 11 am and 7:20 pm with Rev. Fre. Ainsworth in charge.
Mrs M Baily of Stewarttown received official word that her son Flying Officer Norman Belly is presumed dead on active service overseas. He was first reported missing last February and there is continued hope he may yet be found alive.
Mr and Mrs William Mc Nally announce the birth of their son David William at Guelph General Hospital on Thursday October 1 1345.
In loving memory of Mrs James Inglis who passed away October 24 1944. A mother with a heart of gold who meant much to us. Gone but not forgotten by daughter Jeam and son-in-law William Brennan with memories that linger. A small token to show we still remember.
