Report from Simcoe notes an unusual Chariot Race with Indians using front axle chariots from old Ford cars. The driver’s box held a single rider as ponies pulled the team, finishing a half mile in 56 seconds.
Mrs. J. D. Heaslip mother of Mrs. J. H. Chamberlain died in Calgary Alberta. Mrs. Chamberlain flew to Calgary for the funeral service. Interment will take place in Guelph later this week.
At St John’s Womans Missionary Society autumn thankoffering on October 3 in the church hall Mrs Elizabeth Gene shared a Christ centered message. She recounted John Geddes a Canadian missionary whose work among Fiji islanders spread devotion and conversion.
At St. John's Church a morning baptism observed for William Stephen Eason Randy William Louth and David Albert Graham sons of local families amid a Thanksgiving themed service. The day featured choir performances under N Tadd and Ruth Evan soloists and a sermon on forgiveness by Rev J M Smith.
Three ministers join Halton Presbytery at St John’s Church Georgetown with Rev. Almack Currey Dempsey and others welcomed. Meeting led by Rev Mercer included sermons and reports on church missions and evangelism. Delegates Drummond and Rev Albright offered guidance as speakers outlined plans for expansion and support.
A warning is issued to town youth that strict action will follow any break-ins at the high school. Recent incidents include four boys entering the building, a window opened, and a science room window broken with papers disturbed. Police watch and school board urge parents and students to treat entry to a public building as a serious offense.
Miss Ruth Goodman of Montreat is hosted this week by Mr and Mrs Horace Bell at their farm near town. Thanksgiving visitors include Mr and Mrs Walter Biehn and Thomas Lee Stephen Vicky and Nancy from Ingersoll. Brock Miller newlyweds visit Georgetown area relatives. Clarence Lyons and L Laverne Thompson return from a five week motor trip to the Pacific coast.
Michael Beer son of Dr and Mrs Paul Beer formerly of Georgetown High School left for England in September to study for his Doctor of Philosophy degree at the University of Manchester. He earned a Master of Arts from the University of Toronto in June and spent the summer at the Dominion Observatory Ottawa.
GRC heads into a busy week as leagues begin. Norval and Glen enter in both bantam and PeeWee divisions with home and home series scheduled, and winners face Georgetown. PeeWee action saw Calvin King’s team win 2-1 over Wayne Pirest, with McGill scoring for the victors.
The Intermediate hockey club held a meeting at the arena to set up the coming season with Bob Lane as president, Jack Gunning as vice president, Norman as secretary, Jim Alcorn as treasurer, Don Barragé and Ray White as transportation. Bruce MacKenzie may quit and Frank Murfin could take the manager role. The OHA proposes Intermediate A play in a league with Lee Milton Dundas Oakville Brampton, with six imports allowed and Hamilton as a source. Georgetown would get three imports. Tomorrow night the Businessmen’s hockey team meets in the Old Town Hall. the mercantile league shows strong interest, and Norval and Legion face off in a junior softball feature Sunday at 2 p.m.
A Hamilton team sent a scout to locally assess Kent Storey a former Raldertar who skated down east last winter. The report notes Storey has been playing fastball in the North Bay league this summer.
